***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hey Everybody!

Yes, I know it has been forever since I have been on here. Been keeping track of everyone through Maryjo and Bill.
So here we are getting ready for the Shawnee Poultry Show, of which I am so excited. Since I am behind on here, who is showing this year? If you need any help I will be available Saturday for a while.
Also wanted to put a call out for any LF cochin roos and hens. Actually I am rooster poor once again, after the dog attack. I also have a red/brown project LF cochin cockeral (I call him Brian) from Bo Garrets stock I would be willing to trade. Brian is going to be a big boy but is gentle as they come, well socialized and gets along with everyone. Also if anyone has any bantam cochin or silkie hens they need to find homes for I would be excited to have them. They don't have to be fancy or anything, they will mainly be kept as broodies.
Getting ready to expand the chicken yard again, in the next couple of weeks. Since I keep everyone in the yard during the day, I worry about over crowding, as the flock is expanding, back to it's orginal numbers.
Well I hope to see a bunch of you at the show this weekend. I will be wearing one of my POOPS shirts.

I know this is going to be alto of fun and informative. I guess i need to let everyone know that I to am an Obie from muskogee. The Wife is thinking about buying more chicks
for the farm. She is thinking about different breed. So any advise to what kind to get would be a big help. RIR, Red star,have really good layers ,so what would be your pick
be for the big brown egg layers?

Welcome to BYC! I have a mixed flock - lots of EE's, but my favorites are my brahmas for big brown eggs- and robust healthy birds or cochins- and of course my black star is a wonderful bird, healthy girl which is a priority in my mind

So where is everyone planning on meeting this year for lunch? Count me in!!!

We have a lot of crows too. They chase away hawks and don't hang out by the pens. DH puts corn out for them across the yard. The sparrows like the chicken food and water.

I always encourage the crows and jays to come, and will call them in if I hear them close. Sparrows and other small birds don't hang out at my place with 14 cats free ranging around the place.

This evening I was reminded of the joy of a mama hen with her chicks. A hen managed to hide out and hatch 12 chicks Wed. morning, which I didn't immediately try to capture since it is usually much easier to catch the hen and her chicks at night when she is calmer. Unfortunately, when I went looking for the hen this evening she had moved to a corner out of my reach. I fished the hen out with a net but her 12 chicks scattered. For the next 10 minutes there was a constant echo of chicks and mama as they called to each other in the tin barn. I managed to catch the chicks and put them into the cage with the mama hen, but I wasn't positive that I had all of the chicks because of the echo of chick peeps. Once I caught the last chick however it was immediately obvious that there were no more hiding out, because the chicks all settled down under their mama and the hen stopped calling as well.

As long as there was even one chick peeping for the hen, she kept calling to it. Once the chick was underneath her warmth, the whole family settled down and got quiet immediately.

Finally got my first hatch out of my new incubator. Hatched some buff Orpington ad some cherry egger. Can't believe how easy it is with the new gqf incubator

I got my future chicken/turkey plucker home and unloaded this evening it's a bit larger than what I was looking for but I think it will work out great and be plenty big enough to pluck turkeys or geese if I need too, I just need to make a cut or three and separate the inner tub from the outer one, the inner tub I'll set up to use as a scalding pot or can even use it to fry whole turkeys in LOL making the cuts are going to be the hard part, Any suggestions?

I'm selling both my Brinsea incubators and my Little Giant if anyone's interested. The bigger Brinsea holds 24 eggs (28 without the dividers) and has the turner with it, I paid $180 for it with the turner and used it 3 or 4 times, I'd like to get $120 or so for it. The smaller Brinsea holds 10 eggs and you turn the eggs yourself 3 times a day. I paid $90 for that one with shipping & would like to get about $60. I had excellent hatches with both of them. The Little Giant holds 42 eggs and comes with the turner, I paid $75 for that one and would like to get $40.
I also have a Brinsea EcoGlow 20 chick brooder, that warms 20 chicks. It was $70 and I'd sure like to get $40 for that, it's super handy instead of using light bulbs they huddle under it and keep warm.
I've lost several of my most favorite birds in the last few wks and I just don't want to keep hatching and getting attached only to lose them. I'm keeping all the birds I have and hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. I don't see how you guys do it :-(
