Whats the going price for laying hens? & year old rooster? trying to see how much I should charge my neighbor for his dog killing my chickens. would yall charge if someone killed yours?

Good Thursday morning! It`s a frosty start to the day here this morning, 23°F / -5°C.....It`s been awhile since the birds water has frozen. I`m getting a few eggs but I`m collecting them because of the the overnite low temps (no bator, I hen hatch)...I`m looking forward to my 1st hatch here in about 4 years.

I hope y`all have a great day! 47 daze until Spring!

Good morning! cold here too. nice hen what breed is it? I have 1 hen left after a dog killed them all. maybe you can tell me what she? is cause I don't know got her as a chick from a lady down the road she had to many chickens.

Yep, my neighbor got 20.00 x 46 for a flock killed by 3 dogs. The guy paid by making a claim on his home owner's insurance. You need proof though. My neighbor shot one of the dogs and the police contacted the dog owner by the dead dog's tag.

I think you hen is a Welsummer from the pattern and yellow legs.

Morning everyone. It's been awhile since I've been on here - so glad to see you doing well.

I'm so sorry about your birds, Countryhen. Is there anyway you can protect your run from dogs?

Yes, we are so thankful for the rain - any rain - but wish we had had more. Yes, we are beginning to see bugs come out. I hope it will be a mellow summer but I think plan for the worst is probably a better approach - ha. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic about this drought and all the weather changes going on. DH and I have switch planting landscaping to drought resistant species such as texas sage and many of the prairie grasses. I'm not sure yet about putting in a full summer garden - we didn't see many returns last summer either - you just couldn't water enough...

Woke up to two new babies under a broodie in the hen house. Toepunched and gave the hen the two from the hatcher...she was pleased as punch. One was a d'Anvers Bantam...half the size but had hatched yesterday and already drinking and eatting crumbles in the hatcher. There is another one pipped will see if it completes the zip.
In the floor pen, I've been watching the Blue Cochin...it's obvious she abdicated her role as mother and allowed a Blue Wyandotte to take her clutch of 3 week old chicks. So she got moved to the Blue Cochin breeding pen and immediately squated for the rooster.

Mg here is the toepunch chart I use...

Hi Nankat, Thanks for that toe punch chart.
Hope I can get it printed.
I don't get on here much and was wondering how POOPS is coming and if we have a date?
Every yr I make a plan to get there and then somehow I never do.....
Is there a listing somewhere that tells what each breeder in OK is raising?
If there is would someone please point me there??
Thanks, have a blessed day! Cheryl

Good day everyone!!

Since I have been a stay at home mom/ caretaker, I havent had internet until yesterday! It is sooooo nice to be back! I was almost having withdrawls from this site! I gave my first IM injection of Tylan 50 a couple days ago, I am rather proud of myself! Is it just me? Or is anyone else amazed at the pain tolerance that chickens have?? I watched a few videos of crop surgery, and the chicken just layed in the towel with out sedation and didnt even make a peep!! Anyway, nice to see everyone again!

Haven't heard anything about poops. Also don't think we have a consolidated what Okies raise list. If we did could be hard to keep it updated. If we started a list not sure what forum we could file it under.

Those struggling with their gardens in this drought google oklahoma plasticulture program. The plastic mulch allowed us to have an amazing garden until almost August. If you don't want to be on the program they can put you in touch with a guy that rents his plastic laying machine or with a contractor to lay the plastic. I have seen some people report of laying plastic by hand, but that is more work than I like! Taking up the plastic was a mess, but overall it is worth it for me.
Just had a yummy greek lunch & now waiting at the doctor. Hopefully get some answers, instead of more referrals.

got woke up about 2 am with what apparently was a skunk, found the tracks and heavy odor, been dizzy and sick all day- am thinking that is caused by skunk under the house??? can skunk fumes make you sick?

For a hen that has not been laying long like yours I would say $15-$20 and the rooster $10-$15 of course if they are a harder to find breed then that will up the price. I recently sold one of my best pairs of birds and I charded $30 for the hen and $15 for the rooster. My Marans that lay the dark, dark eggs I sell pullets for $20-$25 each depending on their age.
