***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Chicken Obsessed I'm sorry to hear bout your lil one passing. I just started my obsession with chickens an have 10 babies. Haven't lost any so for (crossing all fingers) but if an when it happens I know its going to be so hard for me. DH says I have a bleeding heart with animals, its true.

Question for yall. Hubby is thinking of goats, an of course we know nothing. We are going to get some books to read from library bout them but, which are the best to get for milk, and are there some breeds that are more docile then others? Thanks so much an thanks for your patience! Lol.

Most goats have an awesome personality, very friendly.

Billy's stink like you wouldn't believe, and are mean.

Goats are very smart which you would think would be a good thing, however that means there isn't a fence made that a goat can't breach if she wants to.

You can't have just one, literally, they are social and need other goat friends. They are pretty vocal too.

Kiss any young (especially fruit) trees goodbye.

The chickie with the weird object on its bum passed. I knew it wouldn't last much longer.
Sorry about that, at least you gave it a chance.

we raise goats here have not been doing it long we have mostly boers witch are meat goats but we also have two nubians we got this year for milking. Boy are they different than the meat goats they seem more frail. one is really friendly the the other is a little sand offish. the more you handle them the tamer they are especially if you start off young. there are several good web sites with tuns of info i like this one http://fiascofarm.com/goats/index.htm , there is a sister site to this one called backyard heards they talk about goats there and there is also another forum called the goat spot, this looks like it could have some good info http://www.motherearthnews.com/caprine-community/choosing-a-dairy-goat-breed.aspx
.

this is the nanny she is supper friendly

this is the doe kid she is a little stand offish.

In the past I have had Boars and Pygmies. If u want calm goats the Boars are best but they are more of a meat goat. Pygmies are also more of a meat goat but they can be more curious, especially the Billy. What breed u get should depend on the purpose u want the goat for. If you want them for brush removal check in to getting Spanish goats. I think that there is a book called Goats for Dummies that gives the basics on goats.

I really liked the Boars but they have to more attention so prevent scours and worms since the are not native to N. America..

might give them some corid , it treats cocci , being in small space with a bunch of birds could do it , also if you dont know if they have been wormed you may want to worm them sometime as well but not at the same time you are medicating them . n prolly go ahead and dust them for mites 7 dust works well , get you some permethrin for leg mites mist their legs, spray nests and coop with it ,
I have put a vitamin supplement in their water & they seem to be getting better but some of their legs do look different some look like their scales are ruffed up? what do chicken legs look like if they have leg mites or scaly legs can yall post some pics so I can compare em to my chickens legs?

the 7 dust won't hurt chickens if they eat it?

How often do I need to worm chickens?

Quote: I personally use Food Grade DE for worming and for mites, and dip legs in oil for leg mites...which I did purchase a bantam Sumatra hen from auction, last month, that had leg mites so bad some parts of her toes were missing and looked like she was growing spurs from the tops of her feet, they were so bad she absolutely refused to walk on the wire bottom in their coop, so I asked banjojoe at the next auction what it could be.(Thanks Joe!)
Anyway I mixed some DE in with some veggie oil and dipped her legs (and the roo that came with her) and three days later when I went to dip again, they looked 100% better. I am still dipping every 3-4 days, til I believe it's totally cleared up.

Just my two cents...

Frontline spray is another option for mites and leg mites. One spray on the legs for leg mites, and for body mites one spray under each wing and on the vent. Mine have never had leg mites, but it worked well for me one the one outbreak of body mites I had.

Just fyi, there are some sites that warn against using frontline, but mine had no adverse reaction at all

We love our goats. We have 1 fainting, 3 Boer, 1 Nubian & a Nubian cross. The Nubian is the largest & she is a bit of a bully. Everyone else runs from her. The fainting goats can't jump over fences-- ours should have been named Eeyore if that give you an idea of their personality. My Boers are my favorite, just because I think they are the prettiest & we bottle fed several of them. My Nubian has the perfect teets for milking but the cross has 4 small teets so we will never milk her.
So far we have only butchered 1 goat & I loved using ground goat in place of ground beef, but didn't care for the steaks (will need to experiment more). We do plan on butchering our bucklings that are born this spring, and imagine we will sell the extra girls (except Tarons favorites of course).
I think goats are much fun & love watching them play & browse in the yard. I wouldn't want to get "wild"goats, we enjoy our tame ones. The Nubian cross baby is now about 10 months old & she still won't eat from our hands often & is very skid-dish. We still love her, but wish she was more like the others.
