I purchased my first hens and a rooster this weekend and I love watching them. I'm really over baby chicks! I love them to death but hate losing them. Right now I have silkie and frizzle hens. My babies are Cochins and barred Rocks which are coming tomorrow. My coop and run is 500 square feet and we live on over an acre. I have plenty of room for my chicken addiction what are some of the best chicken breeds? Lots of opinions please

it really depends on what you want from your chickens. If you want lots of big eggs, I recommend gold stars.

If you want colorful eggs... ee., marans, olive eggers.

If you want fat and fluffy...favoerelle or cochin

If your like me.... all of the above.

I wish that worked.. it may work after we do the chicken adventure first and succeed at that.. we are hoping to have the coop done by September and then go from there.

Yes all of the above! Haha like If I could have a bird of every breed in every color, I'd totally do it! Once we finally got moved back to the country, I went animal crazy and I'm perfectly fine with that. My husband is too he just doesn't like to admit it

I'd say go for a little bit of everything, some cute little fluffies, some eye candy, some great layers, and some just for fun. Personally my Cream Legbars are my favorite of my breeds, and the Black Copper Marans are a close second.

ETA: My Isbars are my eye candy. But I am having a lot of trouble getting chicks started with them.

Big news of the day, our new silkie hen we got from Robin is laying eggs. She is so funny. She's like a pet cat and sits in our laps and comes running to greet us whenever we go out the door. And she talks to us alllll the time. She's ev

What is the deal this year. We move to town and end up with 6 broody mommas

seems its in the air- i have the ones i gave the fav eggs too, then my nn dragon hatched 2, and my one legged fame hatched one, now a silky is broody again, and a serama, and one of the big hens is and her sister is running around talking about it- i finally am just pulling all eggs daily, eventually they will quit, at least i have seen it work that way before

Good evening all...DH and I got the water and electical all in and ditches backfilled. It was hard sweaty work but it will be oh so nice in winter to not have to drag the big water hoses out! Not to mention how nice summer watering chores will be. Whew glad that's over with!

On Sunday my oldest and most revered, wonderful flock rooster, Rooty Roo didnt act right. Since we were up at the barn anyway I monitored him throughout the day and he just laid around a lot but was watching his hens and eating and drinking fine. That evening I picked him up and told him what a wonderful rooster he was and that we loved him and his beautiful babies. I said goodnight to him and the girls and closed the coop. I am so glad I got to hold him that night because during the night he died. That rooster was the very best rooster I have ever had the pleasure of owning or being around. Gentle amd sweet to people, considerate towards his hens...he was a great dancer for his ladies and always gave them any food he found. I bought him as part of a buff cochin trio years and years ago. One of the best purchases I have ever made. He was fully mature when I bought him so we arent sure exactly how old he was but he was no less than 7 years old which in chicken years is probably over 100 years old. And wouldnt you know it I didnt collect eggs to hatch this year...and now I am kicking myself for it. I have collected eggs from his girls the last few days hoping they will be viable.

Sorry for the long post but my feelings were hurt so bad because he died that I couldnt post yesterday...I was too sad about it.

that is awesome that you got all of that accomplished. and i am very sorry about your loss.. animal babies are still babies just like our human babies are...

i laughed, and then told my DH about it, and he giggled and said, "NO" again. lol but i have a way of working him over to my side of things.. so we will see in 6 months to a year..

You were busy. Sorry about your roo. If he was dancing for his girls then you should have fertile eggs for a couple of weeks then you can hatch them and hope to get a roo from him. Good luck
