***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Newcastle had lots of birds. I got to meet Bardies (Kim) and her husband, Both are super nice. I took $55 with me and came home with $19, so I thought I did really good. I got 6 tiny Lavender Guinea babies, 4 newly hatched chicks and the most beautiful pair of Bantam Partridge Cochins for only $10. They're tiny and awesome

We were there too. Picked up a pair of Barred Rock Ameracauna crosses. Beautiful barred birds with muffs. Also 2 Black Langshan pullets and a young rabbit to Possibly start a breeding progam. The auction was over by 9:30 which was great for us because we brought the kiddos. Do you have a cast on your leg? If so we were right next to you.

No cast but I had a tiny gray Chihuahua puppy with me. I remember those Langshans :) I'd have liked a few of them also. The ones I was eye-balling were the 1/2 grown Easter Eggers. The lady sitting in front of me got them and she obviously wanted them really bad so I was glad. I've missed these auctions so much but i also feel bad for so many of the birds because some are in pretty tough shape.

Hi everyone!
Sorry I have not posted in quite some time, but life just kind of gotten crazy hectic for me. Hoping things slow down a bit. The flock is doing pretty good. Lost a couple this week but everyone else is doing great. Have some really nice LF cochins (blue, black and splash) still looking for a white LF cochin rooster and some white and some more splash hens. The ameraucanas are looking nice and growing up well. My turkey flock is fabulous. Have three nice toms and 13 grown hens and 4 half grown hens. Came home Saturday to 9 turkey poults running around the yard, so Doc and I caught them up and have mama and the babies all safe in a pen. If anyone is interested in some very nice bourbon red turkey poults let me know. It was a great hatch, 100% but one of the babies appeared to have been squashed. Plus this means 100% fertility. Yeah!!
I will try to get pictures to share of the mama and her babies. She is very protective over them.
Looking forward to the show in Shawnee. Kind of saving up my money for then.
Hope everyone is doing great. Miss you all!!!

So I wonder what all works on viruses? Anything we can get at the feed stores or over the counter for poultry?
You could try giving your chickens zinc. It boosted human immune systems and I from my studies it will not hurt chickens. It is a bit pricey thought.

Yeah. They can be pretty rough sometimes. I heard that before we got there a cage of birds were auctioned off that had a couple of dead ones in it. Did you see that?

Glad to hear things are going well. I hope I get to visit with you at the show in Shawnee

Yea, I saw the cage in back with the dead bird in it, really sad :-( There was another cage that had a roosters legs taped together, he was laying on his side in the cage with a bunch of other birds. Not sure what the deal was with that. The Guineas & 4 chicks I got ate and ate and ate when we got home last night. Their little crops empty so fast that they were starving after sitting hours at the auction in boxes. They've been front heavy toddling around all day today ;-)

Same here. It is a nice time to see wonderful people and enjoy looking at some gorgeous birds. And maybe purchase a few breeder birds that meet the Standard of Perfection.
For the new folks:
The show in Shawnee is at the Shawnee Expo Center usually the first weekend in December.

Updating because BetsyOk said it was going to be Dec 14...and just one day this year. Hope to see a bunch of you there.

Need to make sure they are getting plenty of water to help that food work thru their little systems.
I've found when little ones have been without food to feed them a little every hour rather than let them overfill their crops.

Rebecca! So good to see you posting here. Hope to see you and Doc and Coral and Nana and whoever else goes! The show is actually the second weekend in December. This year it is a one-day show--December 14. They started that last year, and I hope they change it back to two days!

I added honey to their water and they sucked it down. I don't even like to feed bread for treats to the older ones without soaking it in water. I keep envisioning a dry hard ball of food in the birds crops.

Does anyone know of a source for wooden 55 gal barrels? Not plastic.
