***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I just love their round fluffy shape!!!

Our newest additions will be here mid February. It can't be soon enough for our poor RStar hen, she is the one my son has decided to carry around now

We ordered a Partridge Cochin roo, it looks like he will eventually get too big for my son to carry but hopefully he will be docile enough to tolerate lots of love!
The other birds in the order are production layers some more EE's (I can't wait) and 3 Buff Brahmas (one roo). That will put me up to 38 females 5 roos!
Does everyone think that is an alright ratio? The roos I have are pretty docile, one Light Brahma, one SSH, and an EE. The EE is the only one I am concerned about he is in the process of boot camp right now (which entails lots of cuddles while I do chores LOL)!

That might be OK on the number of roos, given the breeds I would say see how they get along and how they treat the hens. Most of those breeds are known for good temperament. Will they all be cooped and penned together? Will they have free range time to "get away" from each other when needed?

@artsyrobin you'd better come get this little fellow quick- he's a sweetheart and growing on me living in the spare room all week!

I let them range when we are home and they have a HUGE coop and a good size run. All of my chosen roos are big guys, (other than my plucky SSHamburg) and the Light Brahma, Jack, is so big, but I think he knows that he doesn't need to push his weight around! The new bunch will be in the brooding room until they are 12+ weeks anyway.

Another question. Will I have any trouble when I remove/replace roos from the flock for breeding? They will still be able to see the rest of the flock. I am not too concerned about the hens, but I am worried about aggression and pecking order issues especially with Jack (dominate roo).

Your big Cochin roo probably won't be to heavy for your son to carry. They average 12lbs. or a little more. They are mostly feathers, that just makes them look big.

I have a horibble stomache bug, been going on since Sunday. If I am not better by morning I will call the Dr.
I am somewhat better but I suspect it is not a bug but something like Giardia, (a real bug).

I do have some Kindergarten and Pre-K students. That age group is a common source. I always wash my hands carefully around kids and chickens but........actually, chickens couldn't be the source, only mammals.

I told him that he better be a good boy! His sister is the rascal is the hatch.
Like to roam far and doesn't want to go back in the pen. Twice she has been out all night! Scared me good.

That reminds me, those that were wanting raspberry starts, anytime from now till spring (on a non frozen day) they can be dug up and transplanted.  Just get w/ me for meeting arrangements.
I'd love some! Where are you located? I'm in Mustang but work in OKC and go to school in Stillwater. Maybe you're along those routes! :D

- a couple of my little Cochin girls ate all the berries on my plants this year. They can sure spot them on the bush and must like them as much as I do. I think I could live on raspberries.

I love your babies!!! I have been looking for some silkies for my daughter that are possible show quality so she can show for 4-H. I can't find any unless they are $20 a chick and in another state like California. Any chance you can tell me where you got yours?
BetsyOK has beautiful silkies and is very knowledgeable about the breed..

all safe?
All safe but the four legged fur bag that ran into my yard and after my birds....

I went to the doctor yesterday because my stomach has been cramping since Saturday.. I was tested and the doctor did not find any viruses or ulcers, so I am on Nexium and an anti-cramping meds for my stomach...

I hope it dose, you can never tell i had similar thing a month ago but with a really sore throat took a z pack and it didn't help then the game me a steroid shot and i made me feel better for a week the felt cruddy for a few more days before it went away. So this time i think im just going to try to tough it out especially since i don't have a sore throat.
I just toughed it out the last two times. My doctor is very conservative with antibiotics and probably would not have given me any unless they found bacteria in a culture..Which is totally okay with me, because of past health problems I have had to take quite a few antibiotics and have been concerned about becoming tolerant to them..

You could always get bantam cochins.. They won't get too big for your son to carry..

Yep!!! Unless you end up with the three fat butt hens I got at the show Saturday.. Dang those girls are not only heavily feathered but heavy as well... I love them though!!!

I did not know I had a mulberry tree for several years because I never saw any on the ground. Kept wondering why the chickens had purple poop. Then one day a mulberry fell off the tree in front of me and I saw a chicken grab it as soon as it hit the ground.... Actually I have two but one only produces fruit every couple of years.
