***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Processed my first bird since the massacre, it was harder then before the massacre. But it is done. (I did one earlier but it was a cull) The ambulance just pulled up on our street, they stopped at an older couple's home, the people we bought our property from.

When I see chicken tracks I always wonder what they are trying to tell me... I have been a special ed teacher way too long...

I have llamas so I guess that make me a quadruplet weirdo... hehehe!

I am thinking about ordering from Purely Poultry around the same time... They have LF cochins and I am wanting to order some, blue, black, splash, and white.. If anyone else is interested let me know. I will post again closer to the time I plan to order..
How do you like the Cochins breed? I would love to have a few of those pecking around. The feathered feet and fluffy body... do they get very big? I might get a few when you order unless I find some that are already in driving distance...

Here goes another cold night! My birds have gotten oatmeal yesterday then today with chopped up pear or apple mixed in. I threw them some raw broccoli and tomato basil toast. They ignored the toast so I guess that isn't a very big hit with them. Trying to get creative to what I can put in the oatmeal so its not so bland...

edit: Does anyone have any Sweedish flower hens available? I am looking for one or at least two pullets or hens. Also in search for light Sussex. I can't seem to find any breeders around here and would like to try to not have to hatch my own... I have little cockerels I already will have to find homes for. Any info is appreciated!

Cochins are my absolute favorite

can never go wrong with cochins, but if you have domineering breeds with them, they might get bullied- silkies and cochins are my favorite
I am so excited to get my son's Partridge Cochin! I just worry a bit about another roo of any breed. Right now I have 27 birds, all of breeding age. 3 are roos, 1 Light Brahma (dom male) 1 EE (I think will be dom male when he reaches full maturity) and 1 SSHamburg (I adore that flighty guy!)
My new babies will have 2 roos of 11 (1 Buff Brahma 1 cochin), So that will make my ratio 5 of 38 (crazy chicken math, I was supposed to have 1 of 10 see how that works.......

What are some of your ratios?

Aren't they from Russia?
They are. Maybe that's why the cold doesn't seem to bother them as much :)
Kass, I feel for you. That must have been hard to process after losing so many unexpectedly.
Poco, I am SO going March 16th!! I can't wait! I haven't been this psyched about something in forever!

Today was way to cold for my liking...but the chickens were outside sunning with the coops as windbreaks. 26 eggs from the layers...I think every hen was laying.
Lost one week old chick in the brooder...looks like they piled up on it. The thermometer was reading 98 degrees. The others were running around pecking the crumble.
Our cat Murdock finally decided to come to the house from the barn this afternoon. He normally stays in the hot tub room when it is bad weather. Guess he was being friendly with the new barn cat and sharing food out there. He is snug in his basket in the hot tub room for the night.

You're signed up! I'll send instructions and directions the week before the clinic.
