So many things to try, now, You guys are a blessing!

Hello everyone! I love how chatty this group is!!!

I saw someone mention birds that won't go out with this snow and I thought I would share my quirky birds. I have 27 and not one of them will step in the snow inside of their run, so I thought it was safe to leave the gate open!
he.gif
The entire flock saw the open gate and nearly trampled each other to get in the yard!!!!
th.gif
We don't let them into our yard, kids play yard, much for obvious reasons but I do let them out occasionally close to bedtime when I don't want them lose in back (we have a large unfenced, treed area where they free-range).

They can't stand the snow inside their enclosure but snow in the back yard is obviously better for walking right? So the silly birds are getting a run-about today, mostly because I'm not going to try to chase 27 birds where they obviously don't want to go!

Gotta love chickens!

Oh my goodness!

My birds are like that sometimes, too.

Yes, indeed, you gotta love em!

To my fellow Okie Whovians, I have about 1/3 of the Weeping angel sewn, I'm pleased w/ how it's turning out so far. I am making them for a wall hanging set and had a brilliant idea, I am going to use painted embroider hoops as frames, since the Gallifrian language is written in circles.
You most post a picture when you finish... That is so cool!!! I like the ideas of the painted embroidery hoops...

OMG that is too funny - I just made a bunch of typos because I was laughing so hard.
Muesky and I have conspired to commit poultry larceny more than once.

The auction in Nowata this Saturday looks like a good one: coronation sussex, delawares, welsummers, and possibly some English orpingtons.
I was thinking "Oh wow a really good auction Saturday" then I looked on google maps and seen how far away it was...

Anyone here know any natural cough remedies?
idunno.gif
I have a horrid cough and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for remedies. Does the black pepper and honey method work?
My grandmother always mixed honey and lemon. If you can get some cherry and willow bark and steep it in water, add honey to it and lemon if you want that will definitely work.. Cherry bark is a good as an expectorant, willow has natural aspirin chemical, which will help with pain and relieve the sore throat, with the honey and lemon as back-up and also to make it more palatable. If you have chest congestion, I have a natural remedy for that as well. I have been studying herbology for 20+ years and have quite a few tried and true remedies in my arsenal.

I have yet another question for everyone out there.

I plan on going to the auction this weekend and I really want to bring home some birds. So... what do YOU do when you quarantine your new chickens? What I mean is what do you house them in or do they get their own yard. I am planning ahead before I get them just to get some things ready... just incase. How long do you normally quarantine them also?
hu.gif
I quarantine them for at least 30 days.. My quarantine pen is a good distance from the chicken yard and I have a barrier around it so my other birds can not get close.. I have been known to leave them in the pen longer just depending on age, health, and if I feel they are ready to be integrated into the flock.. My quarantine pen is a 6'x12' A-frame with all the luxuries the rest of the flock gets, which is food, water, roost, a couple of small dog houses and is covered from the elements.. I do not provide heat for anyone..

We have been sick since Sunday.. I finally gave in and came home early yesterday and am home for the rest of the week.. Been sleeping and resting a lot... I feel like death warmed over even after sleeping 12+ hours....
Saturday at the auction I got really cold and I am pretty sure that is what caused it....

Sorry. It's not fun, I can attest to that!

Get well soon! And thank you for the recommendation above.

For a second I thought you were talking about eggs, and I was thinking, I didn't remember you talking about setting eggs, then I realized what you were really talking about! lol

That's funny.
gig.gif
However, I do have two hens on eggs. They were put under them on Dec, 29th. When they turn broody we always let them set on golf balls a few days to make sure they're serious.) I had my only australorp pullet (10 mo), turn broody on Sunday of all days. It's just now warm enough, I feel safe in giving her some of the eggs we gather. I want to give her only 4 because this winter has already been brutal on them. I guess now we've decided to give her six.
I honestly wouldn't blame you for not getting out. It's COLD!
wink.png
I don't get out often either. If I do I am either with my husband or I am going to church, going to one of my kids things (daughter in Irish dance and son in Karate), and now I am getting out to chicken things (soon). I have a group of girlfriends I use to socialize with but we all just haven't gotten together on days that are convenient for me... so I don't see them much anymore. If you are on this forum then that is a great way to talk to people who share a common interest. It's a great way to meet others then later meet sometime...
ya.gif

LOL! I thought the same thing. Then I noticed what she was talking about. LOL!
It;s really not the cold, although since I've gotten older, I'm not as crazy about it. Health, I guess, but I could be using that as an excuse. I know hubby is exasperated that I don't go with him to church anymore. I never thought it was something I'd quit either.
As far as the common interest thing goes, you are so right. I just love my little fuzzy, fluffy butts and believe they are more intelligent than people give them credit for,. I told hubby he would have to bow down to some of you because I've met my match and more so, with the worry wart things.

I don't think he believes me. I should start reading him some of these posts.

X 2^2.... I was also thinking eggs, then saw the avatar thing.
Congrats on your achievement...so much better than chicks! (and you know that almost nothing is better than chicks)
Does that granddaughter that likes chickens get to spend much time with you? (ironic about the Colorado/ok swap!)
My granddaughter did spend a lot of time with me, Her mother took a job were she works on week-ends., so now I don't spend as much time. She used to come every week end. I originally bought the Americaunas for her,and she made sure they were handled.
big_smile.png
My daughter had a part-time job on a ranch, and they had chickens. The coops and pens hadn't been cleaned in forever and it took her days to get them right. They had a rooster(ee) that followed her everywhere she went. She sure misses him. I should try to buy him and bring him here, if he's still alive. When she left, she was worried they wouldn't be locked up at night and the predator problem there was bad.
sad.png
Hubby says it would be ok but he really wants a purebred Americauna rooster. We have 34 layers with some 2 and 3 mo. old pullets. and only two roosters. However, all the eggs I crack open r fertile, and we get a 90% or better, hatch rate. (It's been until now, the same hens, who are great setters and mothers)
Yes, it is ironic about the Co./Ok. swap. We migrated her from Colorado. I wish they would have had good marriages. I am trying to answer posts, but I'm hogging a lot of space at one time. I'll catch up since I din't read yesterday and go from there.
I'm addicted to all of you. I love reading what each one of you has to say, whether it be a little or a lot.
