if you have a bully in the flock, pull her out for a couple days, then re-introduce, it will change the flock pecking order- and she won't be as bossy, the other suggestion is a spray bottle with water, spray her when she goes after soeone, she won't know where its coming from just that she gets a wet face when she is aggressive

I thought I would introduce myself. I'm new here and new to chicken raising. I'm in south Tulsa. I've been thinking about getting a few chickens for several years and have decided to just do it! I'm trying to decide which type to get and where to get them. I think I would like to have two Plymouth Rocks and two Sussex or Sex-links. Any suggestions??! Also, where to buy locally? Atwoods said they would have some in in 3-4 weeks but I don't know what kind they'll have. I'm looking forward to connecting with local hobby farmers and learning from you all! Thank you for any help you can give me!

Atwoods will have barred "Plymouth Rocks" in their pullet bin.. I have one, but she is basically a barred Leghorn. She lays a white egg almost everyday.

one of mine is a red sex link and she's great. i got her from a guy in skiatook. he treats his birds real well and sells at a fair price. i really wish i still had his number. he advertises on cragslist sometimes so you may find him on there. i bought 2 others from attwoods as chicks and it was actually kinda fun trying to guess there breed as they grow.

Well my first hatch of the year was a success. I put 8 maran eggs in with 1 EE to check for fertility of the maran eggs. I do a light colored egg to check development along the way because the marans are sooo hard to see into.  Up until yesterday I really didn't know if the marans were even developed.  But 5 hatched out, 2 didn't develop and 1 died in shell at hatch.  I actually think the marans got too big for the shell.  The last one needed help because it had partially zipped and then couldn't move around.  It was all the way up in the top of the egg.  Same with the one that died in shell.  The whole egg was dark I thought either I just couldn't see in or it was going to explode. Low and behold when I put a small hole in the very top hair puffed out.  Poor baby internally pipped but wasn't able to externally pip.  I must have had my temp up too much because it is just now ending day 21. But good news...My marans are fertile!

Welcome to Chickaholics Anonymous! We'll make sure you get well and truly addicted. My first chickens came from Tractor Supply, and if you're not dead set on certain breeds, you can't go wrong with them. My Bumpers is one of my original sex-links and she gives me an ostrich-sized egg almost every single day!

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and just spent the last oh... 6 or 7 hours reading through the Tulsa thread where I also posted an almost identical introduction so I apologize to those of you who are subscribed to both threads. Haha.
Well, a bit about me: I grew up on a farm in Collinsville but have been away since I was 20 and have even lived in the city (Tulsa) in an apt (something I said I would NEVER do) for the last year. Now that I'm settling down a bit (at 26) I think I'm ready to start looking at something a bit more permanent. Since I'm a teacher in an inner-city school I am looking at houses in town but I want enough of a backyard to keep my allotted 6 hens, a garden, and possibly some bees (my dream). After reading through this I REALLY want some BCMs and I had a flock of buff orpingtons growing up so I'd like to try some blacks.
I'm going to search this but maybe you all can answer it. What size lot should I be looking at for what I'm thinking about? I think a quarter acre is too small but I could be wrong. I don't want more than 1.5 or at the VERY max 2. I had 2.5 at one point and it was way too much for me. Plus, that's not a realistic lot size for in town and my price range.
Anyway, thank you guys for all of the insight I have already gained and everything I look forward to learning from you!

Welcome Mattok1...looks like you are taking time to do your planning. Several good folks will chime in on good advice and information on getting good birds to fill your pen.

Do you know what you want your pen to be...either permanent or a tractor that you can move around?
Six hens would thrive in a 5 x 8 coop building equipped with 2 or 3 nest boxes. Large enough for you to go inside and a place for them to have food and water inside during bad weather. An attached run of 8 by 12 that has a wire top would work during the day while you are working to protect your girls. Then you could do supervised freeranging when you are home.
A tractor with a smaller coop and attached run would also work providing fresh grass wherever you move them. by having nest access from the outside and a door for cleaning you should be fine
