***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi, Valerie,

I live south of Tulsa on 221st (Hectorville Rd) about 9 miles south of Glenpool off Hwy 75.

I have 15 Buff Orpington hens and 5 Black Australorp hens. They are very docile and are very good egg layers and mommas.

I also breed Silkies of various colors and have two pair of Cochin, one a smooth feathered White rooster with a Frizzle White pullet and a Black and White Frizzle rooster with a smooth feathered White hen. Haven't had any chick yet so don't know what I will get.

I have 42 assorted eggs in my incubator here in my computer room and they just went into "lock down" mode last night. Hopefully will start hatching about Thursday.

Welcome Mattok1! I'm just down the street from your old stomping grounds, on the other side of Skiatook. We have a Collinsvilleite on here, too. You can't go wrong with either area!

Welcome Mattok1...looks like you are taking time to do your planning. Several good folks will chime in on good advice and information on getting good birds to fill your pen.

Do you know what you want your pen to be...either permanent or a tractor that you can move around?
Six hens would thrive in a 5 x 8 coop building equipped with 2 or 3 nest boxes. Large enough for you to go inside and a place for them to have food and water inside during bad weather. An attached run of 8 by 12 that has a wire top would work during the day while you are working to protect your girls. Then you could do supervised freeranging when you are home.
A tractor with a smaller coop and attached run would also work providing fresh grass wherever you move them. by having nest access from the outside and a door for cleaning you should be fine

There are many coop and run plans available in several threads.

Thank you NanaKat! I hadn't thought about the me going to work and my girls needing to be protected part of things. I like the idea of the run. I am thinking permanent rather than mobile. I will check out some designs and I'm really lucky to have a great mom who has built many a chicken coop so that will be a big help.

:) Yes, Collinsville will always be special to me. If I hadn't begun working in downtown Tulsa I would still be living there. I just hated the 30 minute drive each way lol.

This morning when I let the girls out, my barred rock was picking on a couple of other birds - I have not seen her act this way before but didn't think much of it. When I went to put them up a couple hours later, the barred rock had blood all above her eyes and chest. She was dripping blood from her wattles but it has stopped now. Was this a fight injury? She does not seem to be badly hurt, but I cleaned her up best I could and put her in the garage. They weren't picking on each other when I was putting them back in the coop. Is there anything else I should do besides keeping her separated a few days? Thanks for any help!

Wait you said she was the one being aggressive... are you sure the blood was hers? Keep her separated for a few days and when you reintroduce her put her on the roost at night when it's dark. That's your best bet. There will be some scuffles the next day and they reform a pecking order so don't be too quick to step in and help, pecking order keeps peace in the barnyard unless someone is being visibly harmed.

Hi everyone. Chatching up on posts. So I will post at length later tonight. But I am wanting to know. Do any of you have Speckled Sussex? I would like to have 2 pullets. If any of you have chicks available soon, let me know. If not I will order a batch from Mc Murry's and sell the leftovers at auction. Thanks!
I'm looking for speckled sussexs; also. Let me know what you find out. I would go in with you on some pullets if you order. I think you get better quality from different hatcheries though. But that's just my opinion.

Hello!
I thought I would introduce myself. I'm new here and new to chicken raising. I'm in south Tulsa. I've been thinking about getting a few chickens for several years and have decided to just do it! I'm trying to decide which type to get and where to get them. I think I would like to have two Plymouth Rocks and two Sussex or Sex-links. Any suggestions??! Also, where to buy locally? Atwoods said they would have some in in 3-4 weeks but I don't know what kind they'll have. I'm looking forward to connecting with local hobby farmers and learning from you all! Thank you for any help you can give me!

I have learned more here than I have from any books. It's a great place to be.
