I can feel ya. I have had asthma since childhood and finally have it under control. I know it sounds weird, but a hot drink always seems to help ease that "bruised" feeling (how I don't know, I'd guess it's the steam as you drink it)!Had a bad asthma attack this morning, been just sitting around trying to let my lungs recover. Just took a slow stroll to the chicken coop and back. Didn't get winded but my lungs are burning and heavy again.
I dont know, a Facbook friend has her and she is so pretty!Kass, OMG take it easy!
Robin, it could be a D'Uccle mix or OEGB mix. Is it supposed t be a purebred or no?
Coral might be going, I might be going. Surely someone will be there we'll work it out!Anybody going to the Checotah auction? He said he'd take her to it.
Sonny lost that toenail, sprayed it with vetricin, looks like new skin where it was, any chance the nails will grow back?
x2 HOW DID YOU HAPPEN UPON tHE oKIE THREAD FROM nEW zEALAND Do you have connections here?from your Okie neighbors and![]()

Good Grief. Take care of yourself. I'm not far away if you need anything.Had a bad asthma attack this morning, been just sitting around trying to let my lungs recover. Just took a slow stroll to the chicken coop and back. Didn't get winded but my lungs are burning and heavy again.
I don't know about birds and how far the tissue was damaged, but I had a horse take one of my toenails off and it was deep into the skin, but it grew back. Thankfully
Ouch.Coral might be going, I might be going. Surely someone will be there we'll work it out!
I woud guess not. I know for humans if the nail bed is gone the nail will not grow back. The Japanese used pulling nails off as a torture method in WWII, the survivors never had toenails again.
I love that picture of Big Mama.. She is so cute..I have a Brahma trio, and I adore them. They are hatchery stock and eventually I hope to get breeder quality. I am glad I started with hatchery birds so that I get an idea of what breeds I like. I got a heavy assorted layer mix and am so glad I did. I probably wouldn't have ordered an Orpington on my own and jeez would I have missed out. I got one Buff Orp and I LOVE her!
This is Big Mama (she has gone broody twice but I haven't let her hatch yet)![]()
If you are unsure of what you want maybe just do a random selection. Most hatcheries offer a mix layer selection and you can always add or subtract to your flock once you have a better idea of what you want! Don't give up on your RIR pullet yet, if you work with her, handle her and love her she might turn out to be a wonderful bird, if nothing else my RIRs are GREAT layers!
My personal problem now is I know what I want, and I can't get them quickly enough.....![]()
I started my first flock with chicks and it was, of course, wonderful, because I was really ignorant.. I grew up spending time on various farms my family owned and thought I knew about chickens.. I was so wrong.. It was really hard to get the chicks to do the things that chickens are supposed to do because there were no older chickens to guide them. This left me to be the surrogate chicken mom.Ok cool. Could you explain what you mean though? I appreciate any help I can get![]()
I grew up with lots of chickens so I guess I FEEL I have the adult chicken thing down lol. But I could get into this and realize it's totally different from what I remember so if it'll help to have some older hens, so be it!
Gregory the first was killed a year before I got Carson from you.. They were much alike in their personalities, hence why I named him Gregory II..I think you already had Gregory II when you got Carson from me, he was a light Splash. Too much confusion lol
I have 2 Gold Laced Cochin brothers who are huge now, about 7-8 months I think. I'll get a current picture of them. You'll love them.
Cochins and SIlkies were the 1st birds fell in love with. I have just 1 Blue Cochin hen left from the very 1st hatch I ever did July 2011. I think all the time how I'd love to have more. Your Cochins are so big and beatuiful, very tempting.
It was colder then that here this morning and dumb me forgot to keep a faucet dripping so the pipes were froze. Doc finally got them thawed out around noon..It's 11 degrees this morning.I hope we see a little sunshine soon. I'll be watching our youngest daughter's babies on weekends for the foreseeable future. She's been asked to work a weekend shift, so It's going to be easier for everyone if the babies stay with Granny. I'm still covering electrical sockets and putting small objects up out of reach. It's been a long time since I've needed to baby proof the house.![]()
Anyone going to the Crozier auction in Checotah on the 31st? I need to figure out how I'm going to keep two toddlers corralled and entertained. I've got a lot of re-learning to do.
I would like to order around the first of March or have shipping around the second week, since I will be off for Spring Break.. If that works out for everyone, I might add..I will look at Cackle and Welp later. I am glad I asked here.
I want to order 4 sussexs. Idon't mind getting a larger order and mixing and matching. I am more than happy to pick up the order for you all and you can pick it up here. I have several brooder boxes, it might be bit crowded but they should be fine for a day or so.
When would you all like to order?
June or Junebug here on BYC raises seramas.. She runs a pet grooming business in Moore off I35 call Paw Prints and keeps her birds there.. She has the nices seramas and her birds have placed high in many shows..A lil off subject but, anyone know where to find any seramas?
Not all of us live in the Tulsa area. I live southeast of Norman in the Little Axe area.. Newcastle auction is one I frequent a lot..Just wondering , is almost everyone on this thread from around the Tulsa area ? I live in Newcastle most of the things I read everyone is a ways from me. I was also wondering if every feed companies layer pellets or crumbles have a lot of fines in it? Almost like dust.
You have probably seen a lot of BYCers there.. I am there most auctions.. Usually I am wearing a shirt with a chicken on it.I make of all the auctions in Newcastle and Blanchard would like to meet folks.. When I was A LOT younger we always had chickens at the barn but ,they were just chickens now as I have became older I like my chickens as much as the rest of my animals. My granddaughter really likes silkies she told me she wants one of those chickens that feel like a cat so now we have a silkie roo named Mr. cat
Doc and I were talking about it and may go, depending on the time it starts. I don't get off work until 4 and will be coming from Moore...Anybody going to the Checotah auction? He said he'd take her to it.
Hi, I am from Auckland in New Zealand. I have one gorgeous Blue Orpington rooster (Frank), 3 Plymouth Barred Rock girls (Milly, Penny and Lucy) and 3 beautiful orpingtons, 2 splash (Gertrude and Chick Chick) and a blue named Belle. My chickens are my delight and there is nothing in this world like fresh free range eggs. I also have a shih tzu (Molly) who follows the chickens around and also six sheep.
This left me to be the surrogate chicken mom.
Plus with older birds you can get a better idea of the personalities and traits of the chickens, which makes a difference in what birds you enjoy keeping..
See, I never would have thought about the surrogate mother thing and I'm sure I'll be the same way going, "I don't remember this about chickens..."
Lol thanks again for the tip!
