***OKIES in the BYC III ***

What about penicillin, wouldnt that work? well, with the temps we've been having i'm surprised more aren't having issues- i have sonny in a cage with sheets- soak and spray his feet daily- and don't mess with the scabs- so far he only has one remaining toenail- not a whole lot you can do but prevent infection- they will adjust- look at emily on the silky, i would think antibiotics and vetricin spray, and keep a close watch on them
Would atwoods have penicillin? How is it administered? After some research I'm more confident is frostbite than any other diagnosis. But with the amount of swelling in the foot I have a sick feeling that she is going to be a house chicken for a LONG time and probably lose her whole foot...

Quote: House chickens are fun... But, seriously, I hope she doesn't lose that foot.

Emily's an inspiration, Robin. That's the same breed as my little rooster who's probably going to lose the bottom of his leg.
Rinda, I remember reading you're not supposed to use the kind of penicillin injection that has "caine" in the ingredient on chickens. Course if you were talking the oral kind it wouldn't apply. I'm actually not using anything on the 2 I've got with frostbite. They're on a thick layer of small flake shavings and I wash their feet every few days to soften them. I'll make them a nice tractor for summer but they'll be inside in winter.

Ksane...do you use Frontline on you chickens for mites? Or was it someone else?

Rinda, I just cringed when I saw you little girl's lip....one of my grand tots fell two years ago putting his front teeth thru his upper lip requiring stitches. One of his front teeth died and was pulled this year. He is three. Hug her for me.

Candled the eggs in the hatcher while keeping my fingers crossed after the power outage Sunday night. Babies are jumping in the shells! Only tossed one that was an obvious quitter. The hatcher dropped to 80 degrees and the incubators dropped to 90. Will wait to candle the incubators until Friday since that is my regular candling day.

I've read both. A lot of people recommend using pen g injection for chickens and a lot of people saying it's a no no because of the "caine" ingredient. I am unfamiliar with the different forms of antibiotics and don't want to drive all over town looking for them. :( I think I'll stick with my plan for now, tetracycline then Saturday switching to amoxicillin. I wouldn't do the antibiotics except it is SO swollen and painful and it does look like infection has set in.

Would anyone happen to have a cabinet incubator working or not they would wanna sell I've got more eggs than I can I fit right now and need one ASAP lol Craigslist usually has a couple but there hasn't been anything reasonable lately

I am a mess this morning

.....I feel like the worst chicken keeper (I know we all have to live and learn). I posted a while back about my girls losing saddle feathers do to an overzealous roo (I could kill him but I do want to breed him), and I have been keeping a close eye out for damage (I promise). I have hen aprons on the way (thank you to whoever suggested that btw) but it is difficult to get near the hens that have the worst damage. The ones that have been getting it the worst are my RIR and JG which are just not friendly birds.

So getting to my point as to why I am a mess, I did manage to handle one of my JG and thank god because that poor girl has a 3 inch gash down one side under her wing

. The injury is a couple of days old and thankfully there is no sign of infection. She is in my laundry room right now enjoying some left over noodles and egg, but I feel so bad that I didn't see it earlier. Is there anything I can do for an old injury? I haven't put anything on it because her body seems to be doing it's job. She seems just fine and is eating, drinking, pooing, and trying to get out of her cage.

As for the roo, I have a brooding room (empty now) connected to my coop but I don't want to put the roo in by himself with it as cold as it is. I checked all of the others as good as I could and the poor JG seems to be the only injury.
What do you all think about removing his spurs, they are getting quite large and I am sure that is what damaged my hen? I just feel so bad and don't want any more of my ladies hurt until the aprons come in at the end of the week, hopefully

Hope everyone is tucked away warm, we got some snow last night and it is chilly!
I have had this happened to some of hens in the past.. Maribeth (Poultry&Bees on of us old timers on BYC) told me how to handle this.. Clean the wound to make sure there is not debris in it than pack it with granulated sugar. I take it a step farther by taking guaze put a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment on it, sprinkle the sugar on that as well then use an ace bandage to hold it in place. Change the dress only every few days for a week, then your hen should be fine to reintroduce into the flock..
As for the rooster, just pop his spurs off with you hand or a pair of pliers. Right before spring I despur the whole lot of my roosters.. It is important that if you have multiple roosters to despur all of them, to keep the fighting down and not to mess with the pecking order which is drastically changed with one rooster loosing their spurs.. When I despur the flock, it is a catch, pop and release.. The nub will bleed a bit but then they are just fine. I typically get stink eye few a few days but once treats are thrown out, everyone loves Chicken Mama..

I was also at the Blanchard auction. Picked up a pair of the Cochin and a black silkie ,after I got back to my seat with the silkie found out that it had some type of twine around its feet so bad that it has lost one of its toes and, may lose another one. Need some advice on how to treat this????
Several members on here are caring for birds that are loosing toes.. Read back a few days and there are a lot of post with just the info you need..

I've not tried that, but I think I will after seeing what Kass said about it. I just use straight scratch. It was too gloppy and mushy when I mixed layer pellets in with the scratch. But the scratch alone works great poured overtop their pellets. OMG they love it!

Click the little thumbs up at the bottom of their post, it'll also give you and option to make a comment.

Tara, was that you who's hen got tore up by the rooster? I'm one of the ones who suggested aprons for them but I'll tell you a secret. I had a hen 2 yrs ago who got tore up down to the bone by a rooster. He was a teenaged Cochin rooster and I put him with 2 Easter Eggers. She ended up with ripped skin and bone showing through, talk about guilt! All I did was give her a nice sudsy bath and keep her inside for about a week, I still have her and she's gorgeous. I've lost patience with teenaged roos. At the 1st sign that girls are loosing feathers they go into the Boy Yard or a Bachelor pen until they're older. The main ones that wear aprons now are the ones who tend to "offer" themselves to the rooster a little too often. Little husseys.
Hummm...

I noticed after putting aprons on my hens they seemed to be giving it up with little fight.. Thought I just had a bunch of easy girls..

Good luck on your hatch.. I know how frustrating it is when that hatches.. I am considering buying a small cheap generator just to run incubators.
