***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Welcome LKHudd...sounds like you have a nice flock already.

Bardies, if the yogurt and ACV don't help in a couple of days, you might add a little meat or cod liver oil to her diet. When was the last time she was wormed? When did she lay her last egg?

Feeling better today...getting older has it pluses and negatives. Temperature changes sure make my joints creak....especially the ones where I had surgery.

Chicks are doing great...all are clean-legged and the last to hatch is a Delaware Bantam. Will move it to the brooder when it gets it's legs.

In the Columbian Wyandotte pen, Beau must be shooting some blanks. Candled the eggs set last week and all 13 were duds. I have another set of his in the incubator collected after they moved to the outside pen...sure hope the sunshine and fresh air made some difference in fertility.

The BCW pen had only 1 fertile out of 7 but for the Cochin pens...all eggs were fertile and blooming. The number 2 Delaware Bantams apparently isn't as virile as the #1 cock.

I have a lady in Arizona that wants Cochin eggs so once the weather levels out, I can send her some. In the meantime, I will have chicks hatching in a couple of weeks.

If we go to the Dr. for a cold or flu the Dr. Does not give us antibiotics because we have a virus. When our birds have "a cold" why do we give our birds antibiotics? Must be that our birds don't have a virus but an onfection of bacteria or.....?
I do know that what ever our birds get in all this crazy weather, those that do survive will be hardy.

Had to share. We got a silkie girl some time ago from artsyrobin and she's been a wonderful little girl. She's wanted so badly to have a baby and brood eggs, but since our male died we haven't had anyone to breed her to. She was determined though and was sitting on unfertile eggs so we switched them out for other chicken eggs and today we were surprised by this little cutey. Momma is a proud chicken tonight. I'm kind of glad it turned out to be a black chick. I'll try to get some better pics tomorrow. Mamma didn't want the little one to get too far away.

12 fluffy butts in the hatcher with a few more pipped.

sorry to hear about the losses to frostbite and the weather.

Not looking forward to the snow and continued rollercoaster weather. Makes Spring gardening look like a far-off dream.
Glad your feeling better. My Australorpe is being a good mama. Glenn keep checking most of the night. She was pretty grumpy when I cleaned her cage, very protective. What a fluke w/ the first two eggs. Maybe something was wrong and she was trying to help or just confused. Anyway, I'mm glad I didn't have to come up w/ another brroder for those three.

on wryneck, i have a little silky just recovering from it, he is actually walking now- this is what i do-
a couple T of crumble or fermented feed, add- a couple drops of poly visol infant vitamins, a b complex ground up, 50 mg selenium, vit e or lecithin capsule and a baby asprin(anti-inflamitory) continue with this daily, you should start seeing result fast-
That you for the info. Unfortunately I lost her. I thought she was really starting to get better, but she took a turn for the worst. Everyone told me geese were pretty much disease free and very hardy. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. They are well fed ,housed etc. Dewy acted like she wanted a real drink last night and had better control of her neck so I Helped her put her beak in a dish of water but I think she may have asperated. Her breathing was so heavy this morning that I( had decided to go to my vet and get an IV set and a lactated ringer bolus.m That way I could keep her hydrated and put all meds in it making it easier on her. I should have given her a nebulizer treatment first, but didn't and she was gone when we got back. I hope I didn't kill her letting her try to drink on her own. I was pretty sure she was septic but hoping not. Rinda's words were comforting about always feeling better that they were in the house. They are all probably on the other side telling each other how lucky they were that they humans that loved them.

I'm an Okie from Tulsa but live in Berryville, AR (near Eureka Springs). I enjoy hearing from Okies and Arkies!

We have 15 birds, one is a rooster. He's a Black Copper Maran, or some mutation of that. He has off-white instead of copper feathers. He was supposed to be a hen. When he kept getting bigger and bigger, we named him Sophie (like from Two Broke Girls) and later, we were thinking....ahhhhhhhh Sophie looks like a rooster. Ha! Sure enough, wasn't long before she started crowing. lololol We kept the name, though.

We have a black maran rooster, Shadow. Another supposed to be hen. And, three other marans..only one looks like the copper maran. Two are laying giant chocolate brown eggs. I'm thinking one of the other hens is laying and laying light brown eggs...so not sure what she is.

I'd like to point out at this time - it pays to buy from reputable breeders.

We also have a red cochin hen, Henny Penny. We have two Rhode Island red hens, Lucy and Grace. We have two barred rock hens, Pearl and Jewel. We have one red sex-linked hen, Lacy. We have four young Olive Eggers - un named at this point. They're from babies we just decided to keep so we've not named them.

We have 8 Olive Egger roosters. Free to good homes.

The Olive Eggers were from our daughter's high school science project. She teachs live science at Jenks High School in the Tulsa area. They have a project every year where they hatch eggs and track the babies' growth and changes on a daily basis for a couple of weeks.

I work at home. My husband is disabled. We live on the side of a mountain facing town (what a view!) and keep our chickens in our backyard with our dogs.

I used to raise parrots and still have several pet parrots. Lots of folks know me from PeeWee's Playpen - one of the regions largest parrot toy stores in our day!!!
Welcome to Okies in the BYC

Good luck Greenbeetle!

Question for y'all....

I have a few birds that I am treating for a resp infection - they are on the front porch. Treating with cephalexin and ciproflaxin.
Back up a few weeks ago... Have been bringing in my breeding pen silkies to the garage in this windy sub freezing temp roller coaster. They've been in a few times so far over the last few months. - so completely separate from the porch birds, but their breeding pens are located inside the yard where the other birds free range.

Last week - two of the silkies (in the garage then) have a cough (every once in a while) but one evening were breathing so loudly - not in their chest - but in their throats...it is like they were moaning with everybreath!
So, wisked them out of there - dosed with cephalexin - they were perfectly fine the next day and have been since then.... (feel kind of stupid for possibly over reacting...but still)

So, now to the point (well, almost)... There has been a silkie rooster that was in the garage the first go around, but a few days after they went back outside - he appeared sick. Pulled him - had sour crop...he actually went into the vets and had to have a surgery to his crop to empty out the crap (sticks and stuff) that was in there. Dumb bird. He has been recovering in the garage all this time - not in contact with my 'snowbirds' but in the same room.

He is doing fine - about two and half weeks post surgery - but now over the last two days has had a runny nose and a mild sneeze. Question - do I dose now with the heavy duty antibiotics...or go a more mellow homeopathic route? He was NOT on antibiotics post surgery...so that's good. He has been on a diet of soften monkey biscuits. Poops are good. And lots of money spent already on him. I like the hit hard, hit fast, hit often theory...but as good as he acts, I am concerned too that he is not as robust as he seems.
Where do you have a poultry vet? My son is a farrier that lives between Tuttle and Newcastle, so If there is a vet that would see my birds when I needed one and could afford it, it would be a good reason to go see him. NanaKat said there is one in Meeker that sees her birds, but I forgot to ask her who. So if u are reading this NK let me know. I just don't have the resourses to spend a lot on my birds with a vet, but it sure would have been nice to at least get a diagnosis on my goose. I have two female geese in quaranteen and can't let them out until I can find a killed pastuerella m vaccine. I know they make them but can't find them. I never thought about asking my vet if she could find it for me. even though she doesn'[t do poultry. OK what is monkey biscuit?

How sweet. I just love it when they are so little and have a mama. Sometimes I worry that doing so much in incubators is breeding the broodiness out of the birds. Just a thought. I know a lot of breeders do both. Hatch their good eggs in the bator and give broody mamas spares or mixed breed eggs of unknow parentage.

Southside Animal Clinic in Southeast OKC has an avian vet there - part time. Also Neels - that is more western okc.
Monkey biscuits are dried dumpling shaped things. I guess that they feed them to monkeys? We ate the last ones today so he will go onto moistened crumbies.

Quote: I didn't even thing about being eggbound... :( I am not sure when she last layed, or even if she still is.... She has got to be something like 3 or 4 years old.... Problem is, she really doesn't act sick - and I know that birds tend not to... but I think if you look and watch closely enough - you can tell that something is up. Anyway, will get a closer look tomorrow. I suppose I should google gleet to see what it looks like - but my impression is that it is nasty - and except for dried up poo on the feathers, her vent doesn't look nasty. Hope it doesn't sound like I am arguing! I am just mulling this over... in my mind, and out loud, on the keyboard!

The avian vet I've taken birds to is in Shawnee. He tries to use homeopathic/natural combos as well as medicines when necessary. He researches cases too. I have his contact information.

Diana so sorry to hear about your goose Dewy. I'm sure you did nothing wrong. Geese don't usually aspirate on water because they close their nostrils when they drink. So glad you didn't have to rig up an incubator to hatch those babies.

Erinszoo, love that new momma!

Has anyone ever seen this color of Orpington before???

If you haven't they are called Isabel Cuckoo Orpington. These are available from a lady on the BYC who put some eggs on ebay. Check it out at:

I WANT so bad! Apparently only she and one other breeder have them in the US. The other breeder had them imported. How hard is it to import chicks or eggs? Im under the impression that it is terribly expensive. Either way I really REALLY want these but my husband said no. 4 hatching eggs, less than 2 days left and they are at only $73.98. Oh this hurts. If I knew how to breed this color I would do it!

You are exactly right!!!

I have three turkey hens that have stuffed up, swollen nasal cavities.. We have expressed them and gave them antibiotic and they are still stuffed up.. Thank you for reminding us all...
For a virus zinc and vitamin C are the two best things to give them.... Lycine is good as well, it is used for treating all kinds of different viruses to include the herpes virus...
