***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Oh yes the exporter has to get special vet testing and certification then they have to ship to usda customs quarantine and you have pay them to care for and retest/ inspect the birds THEN they ship to you. My understanding is $4500 to bring over 2 or 3 pair. And if they test sick they will be destroyed, or they can die from exposure to new bugs here you are just out of luck. Eggs will rarely be viable still after the long journey and the flock has to be tested and certified still. I'm working with a lady to import some of my lines to Canada. I have to be inspected and tested by a USDA vet, then I have a 30 day window to ship eggs to a post office in north Dakota, and she will drive down with the paperwork to pick them up and take them across the border. Even with the correct paperwork she said there is a small risk they will confiscate the eggs and not let her cross with them.
insert evil laugh.... you have to come back to pick them up... ;-)

Had an EXCELLENT hatch this week, my first big one for the year. LOTS of girl Cream Legbars, last count was 14 female and 4 male! Not keeping any males as they are all cinnamon tinted (means wrong color when they grow up). All the Isbars hatched, 4/6 leghornXCream Legbar, and all but 3 CLs (those 3 were pullet eggs so no surprise there).
It just doesn't sound worth it to import for that price unless I was bigtime on breeding them. Guess there goes that idea! HA! Congrats on the babies!!! My CL eggs are due to hatch on the 10th.

I went ahead and messaged them yesterday. They will be selling chicks on ebay and said they would give me the link. Not sure if I can afford it but I would gladly give up my Starbucks coffee for a few months just to get those. And my yarn addiction. And maybe even give up on my incubating addiction as well for at least a while. A girl can dream...

Ok, so I am new at the world of chickens. My only chicks before my marans were my lav orp and I had one cockerel out of the five I had bought. I have three Marans (bless Pasty Butt's little heart. I miss him.RIP) and they are just cracking me up!! They are having stare downs with the stink eye, ruffling neck feathers and then they are at it! One will start it and then it is on with all three! HA! Sorry, but I find it SO funny because they are such boys! Ruff and tumble, pecking and pulling on feathers, teasing each other. I didn't know they started this so young. I could sit and watch then I am just rolling!!

I don't think it is at all strange to spend hours watching chicks or chickens - mental health therapy, hours of it - just what the Dr. ordered.

So is it bad of me to set my grandbabies up to be future chicken junkies?

Poor little Zima was scratched by one of the other chickens and has a terrible eye infection. I'm fairly sure she's lost the eye. She hasn't been well since the infection set in, and I worry that we may end up losing her. Since the reason her eye is in such awful shape is because one of the other chickens saw her swollen eye and tried to peck it out of her head, she is inside, alone. We all know chickens get depressed when they're alone, and the grandbabies were wanting to play with the baby chickies, so I killed two birds (ha!) with one stone. I spread a sheet on the bed, made sure the girls were covered with it, popped a movie in, and let them feed Zima mealworms until she fell asleep in my two year old granddaughter's lap.
