put the little guy on duramycin, as of tonite i didn't see bubbles, so the whole gang is now on duramycin for a week, @Ksane might want to do that too?

so i go out to check birds and its so pretty!! got some photos, can't stay out long at all in it

I got the call too about no school. I wish I could say I will be home spoiling my chick babies but they seem unspoilable. Seriously this pair i got last weekend aren't interested in warm yummy treats and although they were once cuddly the roo has gotten protective and jumps at my arm when I reach to pet him or the hen. Forget about me picking one up to bring inside for tv watching. They are so missing out on spoiled happiness. Kind of makes me sad

once you spend some time with them, they will settle down- they need alot of one on one time if they aren't used to being handled alot

Poultry and small animal auction is held at the Okmulgee County Fairgrounds the 2nd Tuesday of every month @ 6:00 p.m. Next sale is on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Poultry supplies and misc. items sell first, followed by eggs, then chicks and on to juvenile/adult poultry, rabbits, etc. Check in starts at noon the day of the sale. Cages do not sell with animals unless otherwise specified by the auctioneer.
We have been having really nice turn outs with anywhere from 1000 to 1200 head at each auction! Hard to find, rare and exotic breeds coming through on a regular basis. Come out and see us!

I'm 99% sure it's not respiratory. The lump is irritating his eye and (like I think Bardies said) that irritation is what's causing the gunk. The birds have been a lot more protected inside their cages inside of a building all their lives than our birds out in our yards. You can *see the actual bump on his bottom eyelid, the picture doesn't quite show it so well.
Duramycin is too weak IMO, although it won't hurt. I start with Gallimycin right off the bat if I have to treat. There's not been a single sneeze, cough or runny eye in any of these birds I picked up from June last week. If they could see it up close I'm sure they'd agree it was some sort of growth. My opinion of course :-D

Coral, on pea-combed breeds there's 3 rows of "peas" on a male, the middle row is higher than the 2 side rows. On a female it looks like there's only 2 rows. I don't know if that middle row is missing or just blends in. But if i can see 3 distinct rows with the middle one taller, it's a boy. My Lavander Ameraucana and 1 of my Brown Red Ameraucana boys didn't develop the 3rd raised row until about 4 wks old. So I was wrong about those at hatch but all the other baby chicks I've guessed at I was right about, probably 30 altogether counting auction chicks. You don't really get a chance to look close at auction chicks with reading glasses and a flashlight S you just take what ypu get in the box.

Hey Robin-how are the new Seramas settling in?! Have you introduced Ebony to her new boy yet? This hen I ended up keeping here (because the male was making her scream) is a very dominant hen with other girls. I was hoping she'd get along with another of the girls and go in with that pair but she may have to be kept by herself. I don't seem to have any other Serama boys as gentle with girls as Channing is (so far). Have you ever had the problem of Seramas being too rough on the girls?

Am I correct in assuming this method of sexing chicks will work on araucanas also? I have two that just hatch and they both appear to have 3 rows of little dots to their combs.

in my Ara hatch I had *5 boys and 2 girls. Gave 4 boys away and then lost my 1 and had to beg a (gorgeous) BBR boy off of @Kassaundra

Robin, the meds certainly won't hurt and in thinking about it may help if he's got any kind of secondary infection. And yes-I do agree with treating all around when one is sick. You're staying ahead of it that way!

I guess it's pretty mean stuff. Chickens can be vaccinated but they have to be kept from carriers. Guess if they live they are carriers for life. They had a necropsy done after they lost one. I know they are just devastated by this. Wish there were some way to treat the flock but if the state rules to have the flock destroyed, nothing they can do about it then start all over with what they had and were breeding. It's pretty rare to get but they got it somehow.



I went to the Pryor show yesterday and they had a bunch of Silkies for sale but they were all male. My oldest daughter is really wanting a Silkie with the "full poof going on". We should have spent the extra money at the auction for two guaranteed pullets instead of the two we got. So if anyone has or knows of someone with what were looking for I would love to talk about price. Mainly looking for Lavender, buff or paint. Thanks all!

I think it is a cockerel... I could be wrong but it does look like it to me.

With the flash on so it takes away more of the blue...

I know it's not that great of a close up but I really think that comb is bigger than if it were a female.
