***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hello all you Okies!! Anyone from the Ardmore area? We just started our little flock of 4 adult hens and 6 approx. 2 month old pullets.
I only have one who is laying at this time, but baby its cold outside!
tongue.png
I'm wanting to let my girls do a little free ranging in the afternoon, but they will have to be supervised because of my neighbors dogs. We also have a coon problem, so I don't want to loose any of them. My hubby and I have spoiled them rotten! They only have to hear one of us then they meet us at the gate of the coop.
We have australorps, silver laced Wyandot's, RIR and a mix of RIR/ white leghorn, and a couple of partridges. I have really enjoyed getting reacquainted with raising chickens. I grew up having them on my folks place.

Welcome to BYC and a great group of chicken enablers! I hope you stick around. We will help fill your coop and encourage you to build more

We frequently get together at auctions and have get togethers a couple times a year as well.

There are a few down in that area although I can't remember who.

Quote: well, this one has 9 days to go, so shifted back to the carton- hopefully i didn't mess up too bad- i know shipped eggs are risk, they were from a fb friend then she lost the roo, so i hope i get at least this one. If it does hatch he will need a buddy. I'm also looking for a cochin hen or two for Sonny, he has recovered well and will getting his own run and coop once the weather decides its spring...

too funny True on the imported- so many are clueless!!LOL! i avoid feed stores this time of year, i have no resistance at all! So hubby does the feed

anyone know if a chick can hatch with a detached aircell? this lone cochin does still have a detatched cell, the only one to show development
Robin, I have been really trying to find the best answer to detached air cells. So far your advice has been the best and is practiced by others. Instead of not turning in the bator for 5 days I have found they wait 3. They then either hand turn them gently or if they can find a turner that is gently they use that but no more than a 45 degree angle. I am contemplating if I should use the turner or not. If I did I would be unplugging it so it wouldn't be turning so frequent so I will need to time it. I think the turner will be more gentle than me. I keep touching the stinking heat rod and DAD GUM its HOT!
To answer your question I wish I had experience but I can share what I have been looking up all over the internet... I stopped stressing out about the air cell once I started thinking about the development of the embryo. Think of it this way. We let it settle for the 3-5 days in the bator so all the air bubbles can settle to the top and if were lucky the air cell can reattach. Even with a detached air cell you turn it (gently). Even if it doesn't reattach. Once you reach day 16 stop turning. At this stage they are getting ready to make way to the top of the egg. Keep the egg sitting up right during the extra long lock down. The air cell with remain at the top. Baby starts to get a bit bigger. Air cell a bit bigger. Liquid starts to go away as well as the yolk getting absorbed. Now you are at day 20/21 and there is only room enough for baby. There is no more liquid for that air cell to move around. I would believe if we keep it humid enough they can pip internally like any other time as long as they are positioned right. This method has been used by a few people who have been successful with it. I figured if I can get even just a few of my eggs to hatch from being shipped I will be using this method again. Or make minor adjustments. Either way, I know you already know most of this but I just wanted to share what I have read... and read... and read LOL. AND I learned quite a bit from our own Robin!

Whom actually was the first to tell me not to turn them the first few days....

Where are some of the auctions? I know of one in Sulfur and have heard of one at Blue, Okka.
Oh wow, auctions. There are quite a few going on here and there. But please be aware of what you are bidding on when you go. Get those birds OUT of the cage and look them over!!! I have gotten boys that were said to be girls and sick birds as well. I don't want to scare you but I just wanted to let you be aware and don't be afraid to get them out to check them over. You might check out Crozier auctions Then I think there is an auction in Newcastle. I'm more in the Tulsa area so I know more up here than around the rest of OK. I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction...

Pryor will have it's swap this Sat. at noon I believe at Orshlens (spelling?). There will be a poultry show in Nowata next month on the 5th (hay hay hay!!!! I'm wanting to jump on my first chance to get my hands on some English Orpingtons!!!! Dying for a few of them but I think I am done with hatching for awhile.). Anyone know what time I should be there to look at what is for sale if it starts at 9? Other than that... I have no more news.

Grampsjim. There are several members from around Ardmore. Sounds like you have a nice little flock started. What kind of restrictions do you have in Ardmore?

Diana hope the antibiotics help your leg. Yes, please post some pictures of the chicks...would love to see how they have grown.

Kyzmette, I haven't mailed your package yet...the snow put a damper on digging a few varieties.

Im sick of this crazy weather and the havoc it is throwing at my birds! Went out to close up the coops and give last water for the night at 6:30pm. All the outside birds were great. They got scratch treat and when finished immediately went to coop.
The inside birds were okay until I checked the Delaware bantam pen Two of the four month old pullets were dead.

They were fine at
1 pm when I took water out. They had no marks or injuries. I put them in the barn fridge and will necropsy it tomorrow. The baby chicks were snuggled under their mommas in the same floor pen. My Wyandotte hen in quarantine is doing much better. She is responding to Gallimycin...on her third day.

Welcome to the thread, I am fairly new here too. I started with a few chickens last summer. I now have one rooster, nine hens, 11 new hatched chicks in the living room. The mama hen is on 15 fresh eggs due to hatch around the end of the month. I think my little pass time became an addiction at some point.

I am in the far Northeast corner of OK.

I free range and all my breeds will be mingling with each other. I just have to wait for my other breeds to get big enough to mingle with the big birds.

I know! I saw a deal on facebook where it said only in Oklahoma will it be all four seasons in one week.
gig.gif
Truth in that!

WELCOME!!!! I saw the picture and someone posted maybe one being a buff orpington. I just happened to get two today so I can tell you some characteristics. They are a darker yellow. Their feet are pink and if you look when their wing feathers come in they are a light tan/brown color. Don't know if that helps but I was looking at some chicks in the same bin and the feed store owner said that the other breed had a different color of feet than this breed. You might go back and ask what breed.

I DID IT! I have gone CHICKEN CRAZY!! Like I NEED more chickens!!!!
First off, we went to the ONLY feed store called "Lee's feed and Country store" on 11th and S 193rd Ave (over by the Hard Rock area) in Tulsa that carried any medicated pig feed. It was $23 for a 50 lb sack. It has, sorry I can't remember exactly but it started with an "L", lanamyacin? Something that sounded close to the galamyacin. I asked the feed store owner if that was close to the same medication and he said "yup". So I decided if that is all I can find then this is it. I will try it and see how well it works with the cochin. She is really sounding bad and her face is starting to swell a little again.
So at the feed store he had a bunch of little peeping chicks and ducks and cute fuzzy bunnies. Different than what Atwoods had.

So I got two chicks.

Yes I got two more chicks.

Two buff orp. I even asked him if they were American or if they were import/English. HA! He looked at me like I was some lunatic and was "Uh, they aren't imported. They are all local." HAHAHA!
gig.gif
I felt so dumb, but at least I knew what I was talking about. Even my husband was looking at me like I was crazy! Whatever. They are local... HAHA! But its like I needed more chicks anyway and I am planning on two more from Rinda to add and I really think I have a chicken "collecting" problem. Or is there such a thing as hording chickens? Im going to make my own reality show of animal hording and I will be the first on there with chickens!!! HAHA!
lau.gif
I think my husband has thrown his hands in the air and gave up on telling me no more. He knows me better than that I guess.

EDIT: I took the tag off the bag and the medication is called Lincomycin. I looked it up and read a little and it is given for respiratory which I am happy about but it is also for helping pigs (and chickens if given for this reason) to gain weight. So I guess it kind of is something to help make Schwarzenegger pigs and poultry. I'll let you all know if it helps my cochin and her horrible respiratory thing going on. This junk is immune to Tylan, so it's going to be interesting...
I couldn't resist.

My hubby offered to buy all the chicks at the feed store last year. He said it would save him money if he just gave them away to different people
lau.gif
Everytime I went to the feed store I'd come back w/ one to five chicks
Maybe your girl has a virus istead of a bacterial infection. I'd still give her the pig feed but give her Vetrx as well and viamins every day. There's more to give for a virus but I just hit my old age brain fog.

This is a chicken addicts site. So you're in the right place. I don't know where all the auctions are. Are u wanting them all down by you or does it matter. Get a good LGD for your chickens if it's feasable for u to do so. My donkey will kill coyotes and chase any dog like thing out of the pasture sometimes stomping it. I'm in search of a new guard dog(we have 6 dogs) but my pyrenees mix is getting too old. I really don't want to go through a puppy thing so I've been looking for older dogs that have been guardians to poultry. Good luck and hope to see u on her often

All the cute pictures of your little guys. They just look so snuggly. I was out in the brooder house(where the mamas w/ babies stay. No mama they stay in the house in a brooder) Anyway one of Rhoda's little girls was laying down all by herself instead of eating greedily. I picked her up to see if she was ok, and she was shivering just a little so I unzipped my coat and she went up to my shoulder in the arm of my coat and just snuggled.
love.gif
I let her snuggle for quite a while. I wanted to bring her in but knew better. I put her under one of the brooder lamps and she just looked up at me like, why did u do that? Then off she went to eat. I just love babies. It's hard for me to resist bringing them home. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying u get a good healthy hatch.
fl.gif
Do u or anyone else know anything about sarplaninac dogs. I've found one that is mixed w/pyrenees but has been guarding goats. I really want her if I haven't waited to long, but if I couldn't get her trained for the vchickens we'd be stuck w/ yet another dog. I've looked them up and apparantly they will guard any thing on your property. I'd love to get her, but more work on dog training. I just don't want to do the puppy thing and it takes a while before they begin to guard.
