I was cleaning the bathroom, and I have a different brand of toilet cleaner. While I was cleaning it I could smell and intense minty fresh smell (the cleaner was blue too) I had to go get the bottle back out to make sure I wasn't trying to clean the toilet w/ mouthwash!!! lol I wasn't, it was toilet cleaner w/ minty smell????

After loosing a few birds with no apparent cause this past week, I decided it might be dust and lack of ventilation in the brooder room and hen house due to keeping them closed up against the cold. I detected a light ammonia smell in the litter in the brooder room too. The outside pens have not had issues other than losing my Cochin hen.
So yesterday, I removed the litter in the brood room and swept down all the walls with a fan blowing thru the door. Then the litter was replaced with straw. Cleaned the cages again replacing all nest material with fresh straw. Nests in the hen house were all given fresh straw. And started all inside birds on Gallimycin.

Don't you feel just wonderful and like you really got a ton accomplished when you do something like that? It always makes me feel so good to get everyone all freshened up and clean. I hope it helps. I remember my mom telling me when she was a kid in Iowa the chickens stayed in their coop ALL WINTER because of the bitter cold up there. She said she hated cleaning out the coop in the spring, to this day she can't stand chickens because of it. Can you imagine the smell?? I saw the chicken coop at my Grandpa's (where she grew up at) and it was a huge building/coop but still....all winter long closed up??

Lol...I'd have checked too!

30 of the 32 eggs that went in the bator are still growing and looking great at 1/2 time.

That is great news...your flock is on the rebound!

Yes, a nice feeling of satisfaction. I clean cage floors several times a week anyway and clean food and water cups. This time i sprayed the cages down with Oxine too. The floor in the brooder room is concrete covered with wood chips until this cleaning. It usually gets raked every week and limed once a month. The layer room is a dirt floor with deep litter. I use a pitch fork in there to turn it and keep it somewhat level since my feathered excavators like to dig deep holes. Their dust bath box is fine dirt and gets raked every other day and new poultry dust and wood ash added every week. This past week I wormed every pen with Walzine in their water, checked for mites and trimmed nails and feathers on the fluffy butts to improve fertility.
