***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I'm in Skiatook!

And I would love some blue Marans too!
I should have some for POOPS then.
I have 19 chicks of various ages, 2 weeks to 6 weeks, now. I am bringing some to Newcastle auction Saturday; a few young pairs- Splash roo and Blue pullet, Blue roo and Splash pullet and maybe a Blue pair.
Marans are easy to sex at 5 weeks. At 4 weeks no difference in male and female but almost overnight the boys' combs grow, plus the boys and girls start acting distinctly different. The boys stick their heads up on guard, stink eye already.

You are a teacher too?  :yiipchick  What is it with Teachers and poultry?

Yup, chemistry. How about you? The good (or bad, depending on your perspective) thing is that I found an incubator in the biology stock room... I wanna hatch now!

I am coming to like Marans more and more. They are not my cuddily Cochins but they are very friendly and curious. They are really good layers too. I already have 24 hardy chicks from just one roo and pullet. (I have since added another laying hen and have anouther pullet soon near point of lay.) Neighbor Jack has had 6 different colors of Marans and they all lay very well except the Wheatens.

Really? My marans are not particularly good layer. 3-4 eggs per week.

I teach Art, Muesky; Sped, Nanakat is a former Art teacher and Principal. Pollo Poco teaches Art too.

I can't tell you not to fire up that incubator. I now have a Sportsman incubator and a hatcher.
Thursday will be my first day to put them in lock down! (Neighbor hatched my 2 to 6 week old Marans). Nine dozen eggs to candle. I am in trouble if I get a good hatch!

Jack's Cockoos may be his best, usually 5 eggs each per week, and his Gold Salmons a close second.
His Welsummers and RIRs are his best layers. One day I ask how the hens were doing and he answered that the RIRs were "throwing eggs at him".

My one Splash girl has layed 6 eggs a week since mid Feb.

Maybe they just seem to be good layers to me compared to my Cochins!

Evening Folks!!!
Well sold 6+ turkey eggs on ebay and made an nice bit of money... Threw in a few extra just because they were willing to pay so much.. Started another one this evening.. Finally these eating machines are making a bit of money to off set the cost... Yeah right!!! hehehe!
Planning on going to Newcastle Saturday.. Think I will drop off my stuff early then head back to Norman for a while because the Medieval Faire is this weekend, also. Really wanting some fried peaches and fried cheese on a stick!!! Yummy!!!
I started building the platform to put the coop up on. Going to have to pick up a few more things to reenforce it but once it is done it will make it much easier to keep the coop clean, and keep the water out.. Once the platform is done I will move the coop and chicken yard.. I am super excited on getting it all set up, it is going to look great and be much easier to maintain.. Plus I will have 6 breeder pens.. Whoot! Whoot!
Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!!
Welcome back Rebecca! I may be interested in the poults. And I will be there as well.
Thanks! Well I broke down and got the incubator out of storage. Am going to try hatching via incubator, two of the hens gave up the incubating so I am going to try to save the hatch... 4 weeks and I will let you know...

One NN from the dark, dark eggs hatched while I was in OKC today. 50 teachers and three administrators from our district went to the education rally at the Capitol. 25,000 people were in attendance. We froze in the morning and broiled in the afternoon. I do NOT miss riding on school busses. Next time we have an event like this, I'll drive myself. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck!

aptain America was there. He was pointing at me to come have a picture taken with him. I was behind the camera, though. I'm happier that way.

And in we go. After the rally, teachers and administrators went into the Capitol building to visit with our representatives. Long lines. Grouchy faces on those who tend to vote against education. Glad hands and big smiles from those who vote for education. I hope we made a difference.
They asked if any of the teachers in my school wanted to go.. I declined because I have had to take too many days off and with the portfolio assessments due in a month I will be taking two days off to finish those..

We have a meeting location with shady trees and lots of space (custom coop display lot in Tahlaquah). Porta Potties will be set up so nobody has to go hunting for a restroom. June 14th, the second Saturday in June, is the date.

I now have two babies in the hatcher. One is not a NN

. I know these are project eggs, but the seller indicated that I'd get all NN chicks. They will be moved to a brooder tonight. Looks like more may hatch, so I can't risk compromising the humidity level by opening the hatcher yet.
Sign me up! Do you want me to handle the Bring/Want list??? I have every year and it is the least I can do..

Made a contribution to the KOSU NPR pledge drive and gave a shout-out to all those peeps on backyardchickens.com! When they put it on the air they said "She'd like to encourage everybody with a backyard chicken to give." I laughed out loud in my car.
I love NPR. I listen to KGOU since it is close...

IDK what to do, that's kind of why I posted- I've never hatched silkies before and although I knew they had 5 toes I didn't know they sometimes hatched with extra digits. I don't know if this is normal or not since I've never hatched them. The lady I bought the eggs from said they were mixed colors so I think these are more "pet quality."
Cool you have polydactyl chickens!!! I have cats with extra digits... Anyone interested in a kitten???

You are a teacher too?

What is it with Teachers and poultry?
Goes together like bread and butter... Right???

I am getting 7-10 turkey eggs a day out of 14 hens, with four still in quarantine, so theirs don't count..
I am getting about 1 1/2 dozen eggs a day from the chickens. So need to get my breeder pens ready!!!
