***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Akins or a healthfood store, and I just put it in cheap glass votives or the tiny canning jars.1 tsp to 1TB peppermint oil, a couple drops eucalyptus, refresh as needed. During winter set it over your floorvents, if you have them, and the whole house smells like Christmas.
I ordered peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil, and four pipette droppers from Bulk Apothecary online. Our house cats do an excellent job of keeping the mice away. There is, however, one wizened old rodent that they haven't been able to catch, as he hides in the space behind the pots and pans. I'll put peppermint oil there and drive him out. We will finally have a mouse free house

What are you using to measure humidity? Many of those instruments are notoriously inaccurate. As long as you have all the water out I think you can go ahead and start your eggs. Dry hatching seems to work really well here in Oklahoma, you only need to add water at lockdown (day 18).

so just move them to the other bator for lockdown??

I have done it successfully in the past, usually they will just just scoop them under them

@TRUE5 Can you believe the diff in this boy?? he still tip toes, but is quite a magnificent boy!

Great pictures. They all look wonderful. Are the girls even fatter? And has he started his manly duties? I'm sorry I didn't call u. I didn't go to the wound Dr. this week. Just got medication. I think the tunnels are just now filling up and breaking open, which is good. I had heard of the peppermint oil, but never tried it. I usually don't see mice around the house because of the cats, but saw one the other day and bawled them outLOL. I wonder if it would work around the chicken coops or would it bother the chickens. How's the ducks doing?
Welcome to BYc all u newbies. I can see that most of u are already addicted. But just hang on, there are a lot of great enablers on here.

Quote: I spent the morning letting them wander- they are so bonded! He calls and they race to see what treats- he's got his duty figured out and they adore him- i am hoping to make a big run and coop for them- but the tractor is the best option for now- he still has to be careful with his toes - i wish we could have outside cats, but the dogs are not cat friendly- i am so fed up with the mice- hopefully the ducks will at least contain them and the flies.. my only problem with the ducks is they love getting into the little coop for the bantams, and just park there looking around, the bantams aren't quite happy with that set up

I had a bad spot inside a wall in my laundry room next to the dryer; I'm pretty sure there was a nest in there and I heard gnawing constantly. I drilled a tiny hole with my dremel next to the baseboards so it couldn't be seen and used an eyedropper to push a couple of drops inside. I've never heard another sound from it. I also drip some into a paper towel and stuff it into the holes around my water pipes under the sinks.

The Norman show had lots of beautiful Bantam breeds with CJarvis bringing home a number of ribbons and Top Honors. I enjoyed our visit too
There was also a farmers market and a flea market going on at the same time in other buildings and on the plaza between buildings. Hubby scored some tools and I found two of my antique pottery plates.

Before we left I had put up the pen within a pen for the juveniles...a wire mesh top over the small wire pen attached to the front of their coop. This makes a 3 x 8 covered run attached to their coop. Gives them access to sunshine and a place to pick and peck. This is inside the 20 x 30 foot pen they normally get to range when I'm home.
When we got home I found a critter had killed one of my juvenile Wyandotte...actually nabbed it on the ground next to the 2x4 inch pen wire removing the head and the flesh on a wing and along it's back. Obviously it could not pull the whole bird thru the wire mesh and could not get into the pen from above...so I'm thinking a cat. Hubby is thinking a hawk. Would have had to be on the ground to nab the bird and eat it. Sometimes it doesn't matter how well you protect your birds but it is the persistence of the predator.

Bet everyone had some fun at Newcastle!

I like essentialdepot.com for ordering essential oils for soaps. They are running a 60% sale on some of their 4 oz bottles of essential oils.

WOW! He looks BEAUTIFUL! If you ever decide to sell some eggs from him and his gals I would love a few! He just looks absolutely amazing!

At my front door
LOVE!!!

Haha you've hooked another one! Hey I have some young barred rocks, about 7 weeks old, 6 female 2 male I have them listed on Craigslist for $10 each female $2 each male or $55 for all. Shoot me a PM or a text (I assume you still have my number) if he wants them.

Sometimes it's defects in the beak and/or legs that prevents a chick from hatching. Causes include vitamin/mineral deficiency in the parents and low incubation temperatures or temperature swings during incubation. Sometimes if they didn't have enough air cell/too much moisture in the egg still they will pip and drown- the egg will look watery when you look in the pip hole and have a small air cell. Caused by too high humidity during incubation. If you open the incubator during the hatch and it messes up the humidity they can pip and get stuck in their shells and die if you don't assist. Sometimes it is just a weak chick or again vitamin deficiencies in the parents. Not to say you aren't feeding them right, just that they may not be absorbing what they need from their feed.
Sweet! I will PM you on FB to figure out all that I am going to buy. I just know my FIL has mentioned how he loves the black and white speckled ones and I can only figure those are what he's talking about.

Went to the P&S Poutry and rabbit auction tonight. There was hardly any chickens, let alone people. I was a little disappointed with what my consignments went for and my husband said that we wont do that auction ever again. He said if we sell we will take them to Coweta. (Which is odd because he said "Never again" to Coweta because the time we got out of there last time). I looked around and most of the birds looked rough. There were A LOT of EE. I wasn't going to buy ANYTHING. We ended up leaving with two Dorking hens (I couldn't pass them up. They were pretty.), another baby rabbit(hubbies buy not mine!), and get ready for it... two dozen hatching eggs.

After hubby said NO MORE HATCHING for a VERY long time HE bought a doz silkie and a doz bantam cochin eggs. I'm starting to think that his broken foot is affecting his head. He said he got the cochin eggs because he likes our two cochins we have. I catch him laughing at the little bantam cochin cockerel once and awhile. Which if I have my chickens I will more than happily hatch him his own.

I will post pics of the Dorkings when I get a chance. They are sweet looking girls.
