***OKIES in the BYC III ***

When Muesky and I went to Coweta ayction last month, she bought a dozen Ameraucana eggs and I incubated them for her. Eleven of them have hatched and the 12th is pipped.

They are ALL Blue and have big beards! The carton didn't even say blue!
Couldn't have even wished for better luck!

I'm sooo jealous! My English Orps and Isbars are hatching today. I'm kind of iffy on these Orps. I won't be able to tell until they grow, but I'm starting to think I spent a lot of money on an eggcrate of barnyard mix bird eggs.

I was really shocked to see so many blues because, (if I remember right), with the Andalusian Blue gene:
breeding Blue to Blue produces 50%Blue, 25% Black and 25% Splash.
Breeding Blue to Black produces 50% Blue and 50% Black.
Breeding Blue to Splash produces 50% Blue and 50% Splash.
Breeding Splash to Splash produces all Splash but they get paler and paler as generations go on and need Blue periodically added back in to keep the pretty Blue "spots".

Lavenders or Self-Blues, are produced by the Lavender gene and it breeds only one shade of solid lavender grey and the chicks have a very different down color than blues. They have a light blue grey with a lot of yellow, especially on their undersides.
Self-Blue is what Lavenders will be called in the SOP.

- that is the extent of my color gene knowledge. I would like to learn more. It can get very complex with some colors though and it intimidates me.

I love Blue colored birds but I am breeding Lavender bantam Cochins because I can't imagine how many pens I would need for Blue/Black/Splash Cochins.

Welcome to BYC! Let me know if your kids get into showing chickens in 4H. If they're interested in Buff Brahma Bantams we can chicken train a couple to you.
Ok, Ill have to look it up. I've heard of 4H but don't really know anything about it. Also my oldest is 8, with my limited knowledge I was under the impression its a program for older kids.

Hello,
We are new to this chicken deal. We have a chicken coop on order and will be 4'x10'. It will also have a 16' run off it. I'm very excited to see if anyone has any suggestions on breeds, as well as any thoughts on the whole thing. I have done some research the last few years before I started this adventure, but any help from experienced folks would be great!!! I'm in the Yukon area. We are also preparing a produce stand for selling the garden vegetables as well as my extra eggs.

Thanks,
Rexx & Carly
We would all love to give you lots of recommendations and further enable your future addiction. What do you want from your breeds? Just eggs? Do you want to breed? do you want large birds, small birds, friendly birds, birds that go broody, birds to show?

Hi I'm new to byc from Pryor. I'm trying to get a flock of Cream Legbars started if anyone has any there wanting to get rid of let me know thanks.

Here's my trio that I have now.

I believe lonnyandrinda raises these
I am looking for some who raises Golden Lakenvelders. In Oklahoma

I don't know of anyone raising these, but maybe someone will pop up with a recommendation.

Welcome!

Wow. I was folding laundry and it suddenly went dark. I figured it was finally going to rain, so I looked out the window to check on the chickens, and saw something strange... a couple of the freezercamp boys were doing an odd dance where they were ducking and jerking around. That's when the first *thump* hit the roof. I jerked on my hooded work jacket and was throwing on crocs as I was running down my porch steps. In the 30 seconds it took me to get out my door, my yard was already COVERED in marble-sized hail, and the sound from my roof sounded like God rattling a tin box of nails. Ten minutes later, I'm drenched and everything is silent again. But I rescued the freezercamp boys!
