***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Wow. I was folding laundry and it suddenly went dark. I figured it was finally going to rain, so I looked out the window to check on the chickens, and saw something strange... a couple of the freezercamp boys were doing an odd dance where they were ducking and jerking around. That's when the first *thump* hit the roof. I jerked on my hooded work jacket and was throwing on crocs as I was running down my porch steps. In the 30 seconds it took me to get out my door, my yard was already COVERED in marble-sized hail, and the sound from my roof sounded like God rattling a tin box of nails. Ten minutes later, I'm drenched and everything is silent again. But I rescued the freezercamp boys!

I'm glad to see you're following the age old advice of not getting attached to the birds who are destined for the table lol

Aw jeez! Rudy is flippin' adorable! My lone Blue Silkie pullet from the hatchery has some sort of genetic thing going on where her feathers are falling completely out. No lice or mites and it's not affecting any of the birds she's in with, just her. She's going to be bald as a cueball in about a week. I've never seen anything like it. No one is picking on her so it's not that. Maybe her and Rudy can hook up and have bald Silkie/NN babies.

MJ, Black and Blue Splash bred together will give you all Blues. The person who sold the eggs quite possibly knew that.

Is she molting?

Wonder if chickens get alopetia?

COOL!
I did not know that!

I was really shocked to see so many blues because, (if I remember right), with the Andalusian Blue gene:
breeding Blue to Blue produces 50%Blue, 25% Black and 25% Splash.
Breeding Blue to Black produces 50% Blue and 50% Black.
Breeding Blue to Splash produces 50% Blue and 50% Splash.
Breeding Splash to Splash produces all Splash but they get paler and paler as generations go on and need Blue periodically added back in to keep the pretty Blue "spots".

Lavenders or Self-Blues, are produced by the Lavender gene and it breeds only one shade of solid lavender grey and the chicks have a very different down color than blues. They have a light blue grey with a lot of yellow, especially on their undersides.
Self-Blue is what Lavenders will be called in the SOP.

- that is the extent of my color gene knowledge. I would like to learn more. It can get very complex with some colors though and it intimidates me.

I love Blue colored birds but I am breeding Lavender bantam Cochins because I can't imagine how many pens I would need for Blue/Black/Splash Cochins.

MJ someone just answered, but I'll bet they had a splash with black pen. Here's how I remember andelusian breeding: black cannot parent a splash, and splash cannot parent a black; and blue with blue is all colors. The other colors fall into place if you think about it that way. That's a lucky hatch anyway I'm so glad they did well for you!

Awe!!!!

Our new little goats are such cuties! I've had a migraine all afternoon if I manage to catch up on the housework I missed I might post some pictures tonight but probably will have to wait until later in the week.

Someone said something about my Cream Legbars, yes I do sell them, hatching eggs and chicks. I'm in Coweta, which is southeast of Tulsa. I can also mail them but of course if you can avoid that it will be better on them.

And of course my favorite chick picture:

Quote: You probably are doing this, but are you giving the silky vitamins? Being a hatchery bird, possibly the hen that laid the egg was lacking in nutrition??

since the weather is going below freezing at nite a few nites, do I need to cover newly planted roses and butterfly plants??
