Ok I need cochin advice. I am trying to go through chicks to decide who to keep. My son fell in love with a blue cochin chick that is obviously a roo so I am trying to think what girls i should keep to go with him. I have a white a buff and maybe 2 blacks but at least 1 black girl. Who would you keep? How do white chickens do in the red dirt? Do they do ok free ranging? What colors could I get from these girls and my blue boy? If I decide not to keep a girl is it better to sell as a pair with a roo?

any white bird is going to be high risk free ranging, i know alot of times people sell trio's - a roo and a couple hens-

I think what i have read is black, blue and splash are all from the same gene so that would be your best choice if you don't want funky mixed colors but i'm defiantly not a genetics expert by any means. I have heard that ppl with white Polish keep them inside all the time to keep them white so idk the white ones may turn pink in red dirt, lol.

How does the swap thing at poops work? If we have chicks a juveniles can we bring them. Are we actually swapping or is it selling? Do we need to bring a table or anything?

Blue black and splash breed together nicely. They will give yu offspring in those colors. White is a dominant color but when mixed with another color you can get white offspring with "leakage" colors here and there. Any other combo that you mentioned will just give you odd color chicks.

I'm out of the game on black copper marans for the year, had one hen and 7 pullets last fall and I'm down to 2 hens. Frustrating.

Swapping is swapping. If you have something to swap, and you see something you want, approach that person and see if they want to swap with you. Sometimes a three-way swap works best.

Lots of people want to sell their birds. They like to set a price and not have to haggle. Mark your cages accordingly, to make people aware of your plan. Signs on cages help everyone.

I'm bringing several tables. I want to put my best birds up high, so they are more visible. One is not required to bring a table. It's left to each person to decide.

Ok I have a goofy question. My coop is almost done and I have a grown trio and several 6 week olds to move in. Would it be better to put the 3 adults in a cage inside the coop and the young'uns out free or young'uns in the cage in coop and adults out free or all out free since it is a brand new coop?

I'm several weeks away from moving my new babies into the big coop, but I was wondering the same thing. I have 8 chicks that will eventually move in with a roo and 8 hens.

Next week I'm putting fifteen chicks 3 weeks old in a large 4'x8' coop which sets inside a 14'x20' pen. I've got two hens with 6 baby chicks that are in there now. Moving the two hens and their broods in with the adult flock, and cleaning up the pen and coop will be the most appropriate thing for me to do. The young are so lively, they need plenty of space to run, grow, and learn that a coop is where they're supposed to sleep.

So, I have a chick problem. I noticed one of my newest week old bantam cochins was falling over in the cage a lot and limping on 1 leg. I went to check him out and clean his vent some (lots of poop stuck) and noticed tiny tiny yellow bugs all over his butt. After checking the others I noticed the same, some with severe feather loss around the vent area. Anyone know what I am dealing with? I bought so many from a guy in Newcastle and now I'm feeling like I made a huge mistake….this happens right? We are getting out the DE now. Any other recommendations? And could this be the cause of the sick chicks problems?

ETA looks like lice….whats the best way to get rid of them? Im hoping to go a natural approach
