***OKIES in the BYC III ***

@muesky , not sure what I have and what will be "extras" in the females. I will keep you in mind though
Thanks Kass!

After the second NN hatch, I cleaned out the incubator and ordered some Partridge Penedesenca eggs from New York. On day 10, I candled and removed 4 of the 12 eggs. Four clears and 8 wigglers: I can live with those numbers. The eggs are really dark. I hope the 8 hatch without difficulty. The egg and flock pictures below were found on a google search. The eggs I set are about as dark as the front, middle egg in the photo.

Wow those are some dark eggs
The Easter calf is definitely Cadbury...a nice sized bull calf.

Rebekah...you should post pictures of your new coop set up.
Congrats on Cadbury!!!
As soon as I get it set up I will post pictures.

They usually have a couple hundred birds under the metal awning by the office where you get your bidding number. Birds sell at 8:00 a.m., or at least they sold at 8:00 the last time I was there. Junk in the field starts around 11:00. I will not put my birds in their sale unless I have scrap wire to make cages. Cages sell with the birds. Also, the auctioneer drives a golf cart through the rows. Be prepared for him to miss everything you have written on your cages. You have to be right there when your birds sell to make sure they are described correctly. I had double laced Barnevelder pullets in a cage that was clearly marked. The auctioneer fumbled over the pronunciation of Barnevelder, so instead he said, "In lot #Berf we have three brown chickens. Are they hens? I don't know. How much will you give for three brown chickens?" I was at his shoulder trying to tell him these were rare pullets, dark egg layers, but he was in a hurry to get to the next lot, and he chose not to hear me. My pullets sold for $3.oo apiece. I was stunned and angry and frustrated and couldn't make myself heard to P.O. them. I think, to the auctioneer, I was just another voice in the crowd.

Oh yeah.... crowd. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry will be crowded around the lot that's being sold. They won't bid, but they will block the view of those who are bidding. Their kids will kick your cages and bump into you, spilling your hot coffee. When you ask them to please slow down, or to please stop kicking your cages, they will look at you like you're a freak and move on to the next row without acknowledging you. If there is a cage of birds you want to bid on, stand as close as you can to the cage and wait for the auctioneer to drive to you. Stay put. You'll want to be right there to hear which lot, which cage, and which birds are being sold. Otherwise you'll end up bidding on the wrong cage. The way they auction birds is fast, but I don't think the seller gets a good deal.
You know that just does not seem like an auction I would enjoy. Especially if I was wanting to sell birds..

Yes you can share his pics.

In layman's terms he has a rare but naturally occurring double recessive gene. He will always be naked. He also does not even have scales on his legs, and if he is a boy will never grow spurs.
He is a boy that won't look like a boy... hehehe!

How does the swap thing at poops work? If we have chicks a juveniles can we bring them. Are we actually swapping or is it selling? Do we need to bring a table or anything?
Swapping or selling, either way.. I am all about swapping but if there is something I really want I will buy it.. :)

If I have stuff to sell/trade will my car be parked in the selling area or do we unload and drive our cars back to the parking area? I have a Subaru with a hatch I can open up and could sell/trade out of it.
Psstt!!! Hey, hey lady you want to step over to my car and see what I am selling???? I know I got what you want.... hehehe!!!

I don't know if there is something in the air or what but this evening it seems like in every pen the hen's are fighting or picking on each other and then in my brooders the chicks are even picking on each other. Kind of weird because they have gotten along real well, but for some reason they are all feeling frisky I guess..lol
No doubt!! Even my turkey hens were bowing up to each other like the toms do...

I don't have to worry until fall nights and winter. I have several ideas, but it will be trial and error.
We could have a Rudy costume contest at POOPS for everyone to bring costumes and outfits for Rudy to try on.. Just a thought!!!

So I woke up to 2 dead chicks, with 1 more starting to act the way the first one did.

Its so very sad. Is this really normal with mites? Is there anything I can do for the newest sick one? The 2 that died had mites the worse, the skin on their bottoms was completely bare, as is the newest one acting sick. No other chicks have that. This is so sad. I feel like a fool for buying chicks from someone I didn't know on Craigslist. Is this just the way it is sometimes? I'm sad and angry and burying my son and daughters cochin bantams now.

Sorry this happened to you and the kids...
Guys Muskogee orschlens has speckled Sussex.and Jersey giants in!
OMG!!! I want some speckled Sussex so bad... Well I just want pullets/hens but want a wonderful addition to my layer flock that would be...

Sigh, it just happened again. I think Lord Dingwald suffered some internal injuries the other day, because he's been under the weather ever since. I thought he was just healing, but this morning I noticed his comb was looking a little dusky. I went out to get him with the intention of keeping him inside for a few days to doctor him up, but as I was carrying him in, he seized in my arms and died. Poor baby boy.

Ohh! Poor Lord Dingwald... Sorry about your loss!

  • HeyBigRhondaq I'm in Norman too! Glad to see another Normanite on this thread!

Also, an update on my birds. The one that was sick this morning seems to be doing much better. Unfortunately, two others are showing signs of not being well, 1 much worse than the other. I am feeding them hard boiled eggs and the chick electrolyte water. I'm really hoping they all survive. I think I won't be getting much sleep tonight.

The good news is I see NO bugs on any of them. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that helped me through this. Its been a bit stressful but I'm glad to know its something I can handle, and even better I can prevent it in the future-at least I feel confident that I know some things to keep an infestation at bay.
I live southeast of Norman in the Little Axe area even though I have a Norman address. I teach in Moore though.

Wow guys I'm in Blanchard not that far from Norman
There is actually quite a few of us that live in this area...

I haven't have time yet to read the posts, but I did see @Kyzmette . I'm really sorry about Lord Dingwald. I know it gets tougher for me all the time. I need help again. Came home from the Dr. tonight and have a 5 almost 6 wk old Welsummer pullet who acts like she has wry neck. Everything was fine this morning. I picked her up and rubbed her neck a little and it really did kind of help. She made it to the water and got a drink, then started walking w/her head down backwards again. Thne she took a few steps forward and walked all the way to the feed fairly normal, then started the backwards thing again. It's strange because it is intermintent. I know @Ksane , @artsyrobin , Kyzmette and others had quite a few suggestions when the goose had it,I remember some but not all. May I please have some input again? What would cause this so suddenly and not so severe, yet on a seemingly healthy chick? I need to get her treated asap, I know. I'm always sick the nights I go to this Dr. because of the injections, so Glenn fed most of the outside and i have 4 juveniles that aren't in their coup. Two are my C/W crosses, but I don't know which ones yet. since he doesn't know them all. I'm going to go look as soon as my stomach can take it. In the meantime, I would love some input on this little pullet, so I can get stated I remember vitamin e, d and tumeric but not much else or the dosages. Should I separate her or will she be too upset. My gusess is to seperate..

I started to read this and the first thing I was thinking before reading it all was "OMG I don't want to see a bunch of people dressed in their birthday suits like Rudy!"

@hotcurltr do a search for wryneck. Start giving her vitamins like poultry drench or poly-vi-sol without iron, and she will need extra vitamin e with selenium supplements. Increase her protein and feed her yogurt for digestive health. I suggest tbe poly-vi-sol, and for the first week give her a little straight, because wryneck is typically a nutritional deficiency, and after the first week you can just put it in her water. The most important part is the vitamin e.

@hotcurltr -- I am sorry your chick is going through that! I have one doing something similar and so far I am being told to use ACV, electrolytes, vitamins (will get those tomorrow morning), and I am going to up her protein by feeding organic yogurt and dried mealy worms. I was painting in the run today and kept an eye on her for a looooong while and never did see her do it again, so knowing yours is doing it intermittently means she probably was doing it and I just didn't see it. For now, I am leaving her with the flock and will just catch her to administer what she needs. As long as she doesn't get worse like some of the photo's I've seen. Good luck with yours! I hope she recovers.

My new chicks are coming along nicely and so far the Brahma's are the first ones to come to me when I place my hand in their brooder. The Buffs are next, but those poor little PR's are completely terrified. I bought dried mealy worms tonight for the big girls and once they had a taste they went NUTS over them. Got me thinking, could I tame my new babies with mealy worms too?
Hmmmm, not knowing if they are old enough (5 days old) I threw caution to the wind and crushed a few in the palm of my hand and held it down there while softly saying, "chick, chick, chick".

It took about 4 seconds for this gorgeous creme faced Brahma to come running to my hand and snatch a worm and take off, then a Buff, then another Brahma and in about 20 seconds all hell broke loose!! Little bitty chicks running a marathon trying to A) hide with the worm or B) snatch the worm from the one attempting to hide or snatch the worm while it's running!
It was absolutely hilarious!!!!

Now I'm asking myself, just how many mealy worms can little chicks eat for my entertainment .... but instead I closed the bag and put it away :D

can any one tell me where i can find more information about the Knoxville nationals?

As in Knoxville, Tennessee? Might try asking on a Tennessee thread? I don't know anything about it myself.

@Ksane here are your girls in their pen, they are still laying even through the move! The rooster kept hiding behind the ladder I couldn't get a good shot of him.

My chickies recognize the bucket of mealworms so thats what i use to get them back inside the pen after letting them out to freerange. When I walk out with that bucket they all swarm me. I accidentally dropped it today and had to get out of the way before tbey ate me along with the mealworms.
