Everybody tell Dusti happy birthday today! She's one of the most amazing people I know, and I'm so blessed to have her in my life. Love you girl!
how funny. Are you getting chicks or adults. Don't you just love the coloring on the BLRW chickens, Have a safe trip there and back.
Cool! I finally paid for mine and dh will bring them home a week from fridayYou're welcome. Ha! I'm in Texas today to pick up BLRW from a breeder.
I judge the heat by how the chicks respond. More if they act cold all huddled under the light chirping loudly. Less if they are far from the light and each other or panting. Mine get plenty of heat the first week, near what they suggest. But I start taking heat away pretty soon after the one week mark. I have a fake hen in my brooder box (suspended group of feather dusters) the cuddle under that and the feathers and body heat of the chicks makes them cozy and happy. As far as outside in the coop, that depends on your set up. Size of the fence holes, covered run????Hi! I'm in the Tulsa area. I just ordered my first little chickies. They should arrive around May 23rd. How soon has everyone moved their chicks into the coop? I was planning on starting some "day trips" to the coop/run starting around 4 weeks old and have them in the coop by 5-6 weeks old so roughly the last week of June or first week of July. I'm going on trip at the end of July so I want them well acclimated to the coop before my neighbor watches them. It will likely be pretty hot by then. I know chicks like heat but how hot is too hot? I don't want to fry my little peeps.

This time of year (especially 3 weeks from now) mine would be outside in a COVERED run /coop at about 3 weeks. Those little ones even at 5 weeks are easy targets for cats and hawks.
