Hi everyone. I'm down in the sw corner of our state...and have a question/need opinions. I never worried about feeding grit due to all the sand and gravel everywhere. My flock free ranges. I just bought 20 more chicks...and I want these to be hand tame for my 4 year old daughter. She is currently scared of our large chickens thanks to a rooster.. I was going to start feeding treats Soon to win their affection . I know they need grit first. Would it be unwise to trade out pine shavings for coarse sand from outside? Thanks in advance for any input

That's funny. Retired men live to play golf! At least this one does. I'm very happy and grateful for the time we have together. He's coming out today for bit to brace the last corner and then we can start pounding in posts.
I did meet the nice lady whose lab has been bothering my birds. I saw him jump the other day and I'm really afraid that a 4 foot fence is not going to keep him out. When I told her that she just laughed and said "Shoot him!" Wait! What?
Well, of course she meant with a pellet gun.

Actually I did mention to the city boy that I needed a pellet gun and a dog to keep predators at bay with the new set up.
No one ran from the room screaming so he may be softening up a bit. We'll see. I am determined.

I'm sure that would be fine. Mine are on yard dirt after the first week. I use rubber shelf liner for the first week or so and as the get a little more steady on their feet I start adding dirt. Leaf litter, sticks and bugs just add to the fun. Bonus is that it composts really well.

ok, i got some of the adams flea dip how much water do you use when bathing the chickens in it to get rid of lice.
