***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My friend has a 5 week old chick that has just started sneezing and has some labored breathing. No other symptoms that she's noticed. I'm going through my chicken health handbook but I can't figure it out. Any ideas anyone? Or any other symptoms I can have her watch for? She says the chick is eating and drinking fine.

discharge from the mouth/nose/eyes. Swelling in the face. How often does she clean the brooder? Could be from dust+ammonia buildup.

I've crossed over to the dark side and got a polish trio

I had that go around my coop. Sometimes wild birds bring just any old thing into your flock. A lot of the time it's just a simple respiratory infection. Mine started with sneezing. Took two weeks to clear up, but I haven't heard any sneezes the last couple of days. I'd say that hearing a chicken sneeze is funny, but I don't think I'll ever laugh at a chicken sneeze again after losing Elsa to it.

She says she needs to step up her game on how often she cleans the brooder. Thanks for pointing it out.

Quote: Thats so sad. Im so sorry for your loss. Thank you for the info tho. Im really hoping its not anything serious.

ok, i got some of the adams flea dip how much water do you use when bathing the chickens in it to get rid of lice.

In five gallon buckets. Fill several with warm ...not hot...water deep enough for your bird to stand comfortably up to it's neck. Let the bird soak in one while you comb thru and swish water thru the body feathers , wings and tail. You should see lice/mites begin floating on the water surface.
Rinse in a second bucket and while the bird is standing on a table or the ground, put a dollop of shampoo in your palm and begin working the shampoo thru the feathers. Focus on the down feathering around the butt and belly. Work suds thru the tail wings and back and around the neck.
Use warm water to flush the soap out of the feathers .
In a third bucket rinse the bird swishing water thru the feathers.
Use another bucket of water for rinsing until you see no more soap.
You can use a little vinegar in the water to cut the soap.
In a final bucket, I like to use Adams dip to the final rinse water. If the outside temps are warm, the bird can air dry in a cage. Or if not, towel dry and then use a blow dryer.

That's strange they didn't have it. My small town walmart carries the Heinz brand. Try a grocery store. I got the Braggs brand at a Reasors.

walmart has a heinz brand in the vinegar section, you should be able to get it at healthfood stores too

When I was in walmart I went to the vinegar section and seen apple cider vinegar all natural, but did not see anything that said w/mother.
I will try Reasor's  Thanks

Apple Cider Vinegar never has "with the mother" on the label. Look for natural or unpasteurized.
