***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I don't like the vertical nipples. They leak too much. I got the horizontal, they are more expensive, but that was the cheapest price I could find them.
Ive never seen the horizontal. Id love to see a pic of your system. I haven't had a problem with the vertical leaking tho. We let them leak the first few days so the chickens figure out what they're for, then we seal them with pipe glue.

well, whenever they press the actuator, whatever doesn't land in their beak winds up on the ground. The horizontal ones dispense into a little red lip, a cup if you will.

Here's the post I read when I was learning about poultry nipples.

The vertical ones do work for ducks to drink from, the horizontal don't work that way. I plan on having a vertical nipple in the duck house since I can't let them out until later in the morning/afternoon and they need water at that time of day, it's so hot.

@subhanalah and others, I was at Atwoods trying to figure a way to drop a single nipple lower in preparation for my broody's hatch. (When I make it work, I'll post pics.) Anyway, they were selling vertical nipples in packs of 4. I'd never seen them there before, only online. I LOVE my nipple waterers!

I think I got my vertical waterers from TSC. They have a weird drill bit size so I only have one that functions

Here's my suggestion. Go to Home Depot and buy whatever size hole saw for your drill and PVC connection you need. Cut any lipped joins off the PVC so all you have is the tube. Cut out the round section and use that to cap the end of the PVC tube. Use the kind of sealant you would use for an aquarium to both cap the tube and join the tube to your waterer. Put the nipple wherever in the tube you need it. You could also buy just the cap, drill the hole in your bucket a little smaller than the cap, and use sealant to affix the cap to the bottom of the bucket. The caps may not be long enough for you, though. You can make the tube however long you want it, and you can either put the nipple in the capped off end on the bottom, or you can affix the horizontal nipples around the bottom of the cap. If you do the horizontal nipples, just be aware that the larger chickens may step on them, which would get poop in them and undo the reason for using the nipples to begin with.

I believe even horizontal nipples are to be raised off the ground a good bit. But that only works if all your birds are grown up.

What I have done in the past is use the vertical nipple in the bottom of a bucket. I've also used inverted juice bottles, etc. What my plan is to account for a momma hen and her babies is--remove one of the nipples. Use a water quality hose (long enough to drop it down to chick level), put a nipple in one end, put the other end on a screw-in adapter, put the adapter where the nipple was originally, seal, etc. if needed. I'll be able to change the length just by switching out the hose. It'll work (at least until it freezes), I just have to get it done. Lol

Anyone want to guess if my NN chick I got from Poco Pollo at Poops is a boy or girl?? I just love it's coloring and gorgeous NN and bow tie (pictures were taken in my grooming shop)
