I have so much reading and catching up to do, but I thought I'd post this and go back. Congratulations to everyone w/ new chicks and birds. I'm excited I finally got a good Floyd hatch. I hope some are pullets. They're getting pampered a little more than some of the others because these will be the only ones from him that I'll get.
Hello and welcome to all the newcomers on Okie BYC. I skimmed through some and see NanaKat is still staying busy making lots of goodies. It's also that time of year that everyone seems to have an abundance of roosters to find home for or put in freezer camp. The ducks go to freezer camp, but someone else always does the killing for me. I keep thinking I can do it, but not yet. I was going to take all my extras to auction, but woke up one night w/ a horrible nightmare about someone buying them and tying them up and letting their fighting rooster torture and kill them, so I decided freezer camp is much more humane if done right. And they have a happy life until they have to be locked up because of being teenagers and attacking all the poor hens.
In January I purchased a straight run from NanaKat of her Cochin/Wyandotte mixes. I prefer to call them hybrids. I lucked out and only had three cockerals and had planned on keeping one, but realize to do the projects I want it takes more facilities than I have or can build right now. And more work than I can handle so I am doing what others are doing and trying to find them good homes. I thought I'd put them on here first, before I put them on some of the FB pages.
Micah and Gabriel on the 4th not really likeing the early fireworks. Both are Birchens. Micah is the black, and Gabriel is the (silver, blue I don't know what they call them) They are huge at under 6 months
The dog took out all of Gabe's tail feathers. He didn't like them getting out of the chicken yard and would grab them by the tail feathers. He's finally starting to learn that they can get out.
I'll have to get one of Tarzan. He's mixed blue and black. If anyone is interested please let me know. I can't put them in my freezer camp, since I had made such pets out of them.

@BetsyOK How do you house your silkies in the county? Do they all have covered runs? Im trying to decide what I need to do to protect all mine when we move. Right now the run is not covered but there are some shade trees they can hide under, Im actually about to plant some more. But Im really worried because my absolute favorite chicken is slow and has a huge crest. I should add the chicken coop/run is right next to the house and there will be a dog outside the area.

yeah, I have a spare coxkerel from her eggs...If anyone wants to save him from the dog food bowl.
All my chickens and guineas have coops with much larger covered runs. The guineas get to free range only about twice a week on weekends, because our dog thinks they are playthings. If your runs aren't covered, hawks and just about every predator can get into them.
Being right next to the house with the dog to protect them should help you a lot, but it still isn't full insurance against flying predators. And, of course, snakes are nearly always a problem for eggs, chicks and young poultry. To help against snakes, my runs all have either hardware cloth or stucco reinforcement at least two feet up from the ground. Of course, that doesn't completely deter snakes. The plastic netting used to cover fruit trees against birds stealing the fruitl will help against snakes. I'm sure it has been mentioned before that if you remove it from the package, unfold it, and stretch it out (somewhat wadded up) and put it around the perimiter of your pen, the snakes will get caught in it and can't get out.

Black silkie roo!? Mitzi! I could use him...right now I have a blue with my paint girls, and would like to get back to a black. Or, if nothing else, he will fill out my black trio for 4-h show purposes.

Bardies gets the black one. I'd like whichever one has the friendliest personality towards people. He will become a pet for my granddaughters, so he will get lots and lots of love and attention.
