My family is so excited about those ducks! We're stocking the pond with fish for those loud girls and setting up a bench close by so we can watch them be silly ducks. Ill try to post a picture of their soon to be home in the next few days, Im so bad about pictures tho. @Kyzmette Ill get a picture of that silkie soon too. We named him little blue and everyday Arlo checks him for wattles and/or comb growth.

Im so proud of her.

Ive got a marans "pullet" thats about 11 weeks old with a pretty sizable but pale pinkish comb. No saddle or hackle or sickle feathers yet but big legs. Anyone with marans have pullets with serious legs? Definitely no roosterish behavior and since she's in a coop with only pullets I think she would be acting dominate right?

Has anyone had any luck treating chicken lice (which is what Im dealing with) with coconut oil? I did the first sevin dust treatment to the girls last week (saw nothing on the silkies-separate coop-but treated them anyway) but I did notice in the other coop 1 girl had it way worse than everyone else, it was sad to see. Is that normal? Should I do anything special for her? Im wondering if I can use coconut oil for the 2nd treatment? Ive read some pretty good reviews on this site; has anyone here ever tried it? And maybe TMI here but when my human kids had lice last year we successfully treated with coconut oil. I think Ill try it out at least.

Yay, so good to hear!

My son was sold some (supposedly Rhode Island Reds) chicks .  They are huge compared to standard RIR's. The adults are lighter in color than RI's, and their eggs are humongous.  I believe his are Production Reds, but I can't get him to accept that.

I guess either one is fine as long as I get nice brown eggs!! I ended up buying 5 of them for $1.25 each :)!! Wasn't planning on buying any rir but couldn't let them pass on by for that price. The same guy has some lavender Orpingtons in the bator at the moment.. there's a few people ahead of me on his "lavender want list" but I'm on there and should hopefully be getting a call in 30 or so days! *Fingers crossed*

I say good job then!

This has been an interesting day.
Went to Luther to pick up three racks of cages this morning. Hubby has been looking for stainless steel cages similar to those used in clinical settings. The cages are 18 x 24 x 10 ...suitable for chicks, bantams or quail....a total of 26 separate cages with outside feeders and water bottles. The young man used them for his pigeons.

We cleared a section in the barn and dismantled a wood shelving unit. Then his legs started cramping from his hips to his ankles. He could barely walk from the barn to the house...I had to get him a cane.
Then he tells me he was up from 2 am to 5 am walking out cramps...didn't want to wake me! We spent the afternoon applying heated rice bags to his legs to get the muscles to relax. It took several hours and then he was fine, able to walk without a cane. And he was able to take a much needed nap.
Sure am glad we are scheduled for our physicals this coming week....going to have a long list of questions for our doctor!

It had its appeals. Truthfully I didn't want to go, but my plane ticket was already paid for months previously so I had no choice. But there were redeeming elements such as riding on a jet there and back for the first time in my life. And there were other worth times like the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld.

That zoo spoiled me for any other- sea world is ok, but the zoo is my favorite there, hubby was in the navy stationed there most of his career, it has some good points there, but i am glad i am here..:)
Quote: yeah- i kind of freaked out, normally i let them be, but that sucker was in the cage with hannah and jojo! What was weird in a scientific mind set is the darn thing kept moving around coiling after he was dead... weird

My Bantams caught this little 8" snake today.
did they play tag with it??

My Bantams caught this little 8" snake today.
in the thumbnail on the side, it looks like a LF and a large snake! Hope my bantams keep my backyard snake and spider free. :)

I'm really glad I rehomed Gwyn when I did though. My new neighbors in the adjoining duplex have kids, which means someone is probably staying in the room that shares a wall with my chicken room. Unfortunately, you can also hear the girls in the house talking to each other. I don't know if you can hear them through the wall to the other house - I'm assuming it's more insulated than the inner walls for our own side (if that makes sense). I really hope our neighbors are friendly. For now, I'm checking their backyard for kids before I range the girls in the evening. If they can hear them through the walls, I don't necessarily want them to know about the girls right off the bat. I'd rather her make a general noise complaint that I will then take care of, than complaining about my chickens. (especially if she decides to just call the landlord instead of coming directly to me.)
I miss our quiet army guy neighbor. He had a husky that had to have been under a year old that I just loved (even though it tried to dig under our fence to play with our dogs. It was just so darn cute) and the guy was rarely actually there.

He needs to have his potassium / magnesium / sodium levels checked especially if he is on any diuretic. Some other meds increase the risk of cramps like the you might do a quick google search (I like WebMD) to check on the side effects of the meds he is on. I take an asthma controller that has a high risk of muscle cramps and if I don't watch it can get out of hand. Seltzer or tonic water is an old fashioned fix for muscle cramps, but can cause diarrhea.
