***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Making tshirt yarn for knitting some Christmas gifts. As if I needed another hobby ... lol.

Our birds are in an enclosed pen, top, sides, eveything but there is a gap in the top netting near the barn. Five of my birds insist on getting out but they won't put themselves back in. None of the others even attempt to get out so I'm rather annoyed with these five. They're new egg layers, too so when they're out I'm not getting their eggs and I'm afraid if they got out of the fence our neighbors would kill them. So, I guess tomorrow we'll be clipping wings. I'm going to have a few disgruntled ladies.

My birds free range within a chain link fence and expanded back yard that has cows in it. They have taken to coming out to the front through the gate. Wasn't so bad when it was just one, but now there are 6 or so of them that regularly do this. They hang out on the front porch and eat the cats food. Standing near the eating cat until the cat is intimidated and leaves. I tried closing the gap with chicken wire - but that only stopped them for about 15 min. Not sure how they are coming through now. Good thing that most of the neighborhood dogs have been good and kept where they belong over the last few months!

Where can you buy nesting boxes without costing and arm and leg..lol.

They're pretty easy to build, and you can re-purpose old drawers, from cabinets, and such. I haven't seen any in stores, that I thought were worth 1/4 the asking price.
That said, some of the sponsors, listed at the bottom of the page, sell some well made nesting boxes. Fleming, comes to mind first. Also, look for Smith Poultry, online, I'm certain they sell them. And some of the big, online hatcheries, like eFowl and Murray McMurray, sell them, too. If I remember correctly, eFowl has a sale on, right now. I think I got, and deleted an email, a couple of days ago, to that effect.

But, if you want to make your own, determine your dimensions, and buy your lumber at Lowe's. They'll cut your wood to the dimensions you need. It's then a matter of assembly. Until I bought my own power saws, that's what I was doing. I still have them do the big cuts, since my table saw is so small.
I see you're in B.A. If you ever get down this way, (South end of Lake Tenkiller). I have the tools, I'd happily help you build something. PM me, if you'd like to do that.
I've gotten several folks here, help me with things, it's only right, that I do something to help someone, myself.

Sad news here, lost my little Elliot over nite, didn't have him long but he sure left a hole in my heart

So sorry to hear this.

We had an owl get thru a 6 x 4 inch opening at the top of our enclosed pen. If there is any way to use chicken wire to cover that opening, it would be worth the time.

I got a beautiful Cream Legbar a week and a half ago from Rinda. NanaKat, I had it in a small box with an opening it could get in and out of in my coop. The big chickens got it and and it has some really bad tears in its skin. I flushed it with saline, put betaine on it, then antibiotic ointment and a gauze bandage. She is sleeping - I put her foster Silkie mom I with her. Should I out the heat lamp on only? Should I put her on oral antibiotics? What do I do? (She can chirp and move all limbs...)

Yes, I would start her on oral antibiotics to help ward off infection. Neosporin or vetricvyn is great for the wounds. Even using those little suture tapes you get at in the bandaid section of the pharmacy would help pull the openings closed for faster healing. So sorry she has to go thru this.

Good! Watch for heat or infection in the wounds, and lethargy/stops eating and drinking. Is she drinking the pedialyte water on her own now?

I am really struggling with the bandages. She has a gaping hole under her wing, so I feel I need to bandage it. She is either sore or just weak and struggling to keep her head up, so with the bandages (that extend up to her head) it is almost impossible for her to walk. I am seeing an air pocket (it looks like) under her wing. What is their normal temp? I am afraid I will not notice a heat (infection) since she is under a heat lamp. :0/

What antibiotics should I get? Can I get them from my vet? (He does not see birds). I have some Steri-Strips. I will use them. Great idea - thanks!

@BetsyOK I just want to show off this little blue girl I got from you in July. She was the younger blue of the bunch and is absolutely stunning! Her crest and type and color are incredible! I love her. All 3 are beautiful but this girl is my favorite

Day 19 of incubating, 19 eggs made it to lockdown. No pipping yet, but hoping all is well. Last hatch (my first) I had a pip by the end of day 18. But, I know thats not normal and dont expect that every time. Im mainly concerned because my DH was tinkering with the turner a few days before lockdown and didn't notice the incubator lid was left slightly ajar. I woke up to the temperature at 97, but I have no idea how long it was that low and Im not losing hope. Everything looked good at last candle.

So sorry @Kyzmette and @artsyrobin for your losses. I know you both really love your birds. Kyz, I hope you catch that predator.

and @i-love-my-honey sorry to hear about the chick. I hope the little girl makes it; sounds like you're making sure she will!

Quote: Glad you have the steri strips. The more she can move about, the better.

Quote: I would not use a heat lamp on her. body temperature is about 102 - 104 normally.
Tylan50 or Amoxycillan from the vet.
She can take the Tylan 50 orally in small units...1/4 cc twice a day.
The amoxicillin is a capsule usually 250 mg she can take once a day. I wet it to help is slide down easier.
With each follow with a few drops of water from a syringe

I put the steri strips on and a bandage around her body, leaving her wings free (Steri strips would not stay very well, of course. She is not moving very well. Unable to walk properly on her right leg. I don't feel a break, but it may be dislocated. It is the side with the big hole. She is eating and drinking on her own, however, I do have to hold her up to do so. I also gave her a bit of egg.

Should I gently extend her leg to see if it is as long as the other/try to pop it back into joint? I know next to nothing about bird anatomy... :0/
