My first time with shipped eggs, any advice anyone?

not fizzle? The feathers are all over! This is my first bantam so im very anxious lol. We had thot cochin too until this week the feathers started sticking outward instead of just being poofy, so I thot id ask again. Another question, how long before id start to see signs of sex on a bantam?

Thanks ashtree and betsy I didn't come up with the idea of using eggshell for mosaics but i thought i was cool so gave it a try and really like it. Oh ok i think Kyzmette told me they should lay green eggs.

@lonnyandrinda , how old are your Isbars when they start laying (ish). Mine (from your egg) is 25 weeks old. I know there are many factors that go into it, but waiting isn't any fun! I'm looking for a little hope...

I am going to start adding light in the mornings to try and promote more egg laying. Out of 20 girls in my big coop, I'm getting 10 eggs a day. My Jubilees aren't laying yet either, and only one of two Ameraucanas I have in with my Blue Maran is laying. I wanted to produce an olive egger! Maybe it's God's way of telling me to take a break from hatching...

Any day now I would think.... I'd say average age of lay for mine is 24-26 weeks, just a guess I don't actually track it. Is she reddening up in the face yet? Do you know how to check her pelvic bones?

Is there such a thing as too much coffee? Lol
She is still available too. She flies more than the Orpington, but I wouldn't call her flighty. She's friendly...I can usually go right up to her and pick her up.

I know I said I wasn't that in to bantams, but Cochins frizzles may make a liar out of me. Would Atwoods have an NPIP certificate?

If the feedstore orders their chicks from a hatchery then the chicks are NPIP. I would think that would always be the case but there may be exceptions, like if they have a local supplier.

Well I wasn't going to put my next one together for a while, but had a couple of people on another site ask for a tutorial, so I had to put one together to get pics for a tutorial. So here is the burgundy and orange background, I think it is my new favorite!

My last post for the day, I promise! Here's a pic of my SFHs. The dark one is female, colorful one is male. I LOVE his coloring. Right now, I don't have plans to buy more and breed, but...does one hen throw such differently colored offspring? If I could make females that look like him, oh! What do you think breeding him with a (just for fun) Speckled Sussex or Jubilee would look like?

i have been making some egg shell mosaics lately to try to sell at a craft fair i thought i would share a pic of them with you all.

a couple of friends donated there eggs shells i don't have any green or dark brown egg layers as of yet.




this chicken seems unfinished not sure what to do to it though thought about putting it on some pretty back ground paper but idk

Rest them for 12-24 hours pointy end down. Then DO NOT TURN for the first 5 days- keep them in an egg carton/turner if possible but keep them stable. This gives any ruptured air cells a chance to heal. Then incubate as normal. A "good" hatching rate for shipped eggs is 50%, so don't feel like it was your fault if you have a low hatch. Good luck!

It loos frizzly to me, but you will be able to tell for sure in about 2 weeks. It's a cutie! I'm leaning roo on it though, hope I'm wrong!

Aaaaaand.. here's my "helper" wearing the aftermath... good thing kids wash! What a chore it was brushing it out of her hair after a bath though!
