***OKIES in the BYC III ***

LOOOOK!!! I finally got one of the guineas to eat out of my hand! It's Curly, though, and he/she thinks he/she's a chicken, so it may not count.

This is Blossom on the top, and Taffy on the bottom. They're two of the FlowerEEs I just put outside a little while back. I love Taffy's soft butter color overlaying the splash.

how cute they are.

Love it!!! This is our next project! Did you build from plans?

Nope, bought it from a FB poultry page, was going to turn it into a chicken coop but it was just too cute, so left it as a playhouse! Footprint is 6"x8". House itself is 6x6. The roof and bones were good, but it needed new siding, trim, and floor. Came with the door and railings but they weren't attached. Wish I'd thought to get a "before" picture.

Any day now I would think.... I'd say average age of lay for mine is 24-26 weeks, just a guess I don't actually track it. Is she reddening up in the face yet? Do you know how to check her pelvic bones?

If the feedstore orders their chicks from a hatchery then the chicks are NPIP. I would think that would always be the case but there may be exceptions, like if they have a local supplier.

Gorgeous!!!

The tricky thing about SFH is not only can they have different locus (Wheaten, Birchen, Partridge, wild type), and are blue, black, or splash on top of that. . https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/375288/swedish-flower-hen-thread/8653
When I was trying to wrap my mind around it this post was VERY helpful- a picture of each type (Post 7543)! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/375288/swedish-flower-hen-thread/7540#post_12700134

Very cute and creative!

Rest them for 12-24 hours pointy end down. Then DO NOT TURN for the first 5 days- keep them in an egg carton/turner if possible but keep them stable. This gives any ruptured air cells a chance to heal. Then incubate as normal. A "good" hatching
The SFH link was great. I think I read and reread it a few times before it started making sense but thats all great information. I love the red of your birds too, I dont think I got any reds, might have to get in touch with you for some eggs in the future. Do yours lay much in the winter?

I had no idea I needed to wait 5 days before turning. Thanks for that! Im not expecting too much from the hatch, but they were a great price and I wanted to diversify my flock (even just a little bit) and it was fun to bid

LOVE the playhouse and I bet they do too! Looks very bright and cheery. We did hair chalk (on purpose) a few months ago and my kids ended up looking like a box of crayons as did everything in my house-pillows, the couch, clothes, carseats….everything. Arlo refused to wash his hair for fear he wouldn't have purple hair anymore (his favorite color). I hid the chalk and thankfully they've all forgotten.

ROFL on the chalk!

You can turn them from the beginning but it makes sense you might get a slightly better hatch if you let the air cells heal- and I HAVE seen them heal on shipped eggs.

Oh yes Ki4got is AMAZING with SFH questions. You can PM her if you have any more specific questions I'm sure she'll answer. She explained that they are all red based (actually tri-colored- black, red, white)- but if you breed with a lot of splash birds you lose the third color (black) so it's better not to breed splashes much or at least don't do splash X splash.

This will be my first winter with mature birds, they were too young to lay last winter, so I can't tell you how they will do. They are just finishing up their molt and coming back into lay, I got 4 eggs from 4 hens yesterday but only 1 egg today, so it's still a little spotty.

The eggshell mosaics are FABULOUS!!! Brilliantly creative!

And that house is a work of art, too.

And the quilt... wow!

You guys amaze me, truly. It seems like every person on this thread is an inspiration.

Anybody who has my FlowerEEs, I would love it if you would keep me posted on egg color when they start to lay.

I love your grey one-guess it's probably blue? She's beautiful. They all are but she's my favorite ;) are you incubating their eggs for yourself?

Yes. I've found the best place to look for blue black splash is the tail feathers. The rooster standing at attention is blue, the one bending over with his tail in the air is black. The blue and white one is a blue, and the white one is a splash. The mille fluer one is black.

Actually I've already got the batches saved for myself growing out. Anything that hatches now is for sale, chicks are $10 each. I know I have a few in the brooder, maybe 3-5 I'd have to check they have been selling pretty quick, the next batch is due Sunday. Fertility is doing just OK, I think last batch about 80%. Not sure if you want hatching eggs at that rate, but they are $4 each.

@Ashtree....finally, a pic! I will sit down to read the sfh thread today.
@lonnyandrinda yes, pelvic on my isbar still seems a little narrow, but she is reddening In the face. I'm not disappointed. It's like not being quite sure which day Santa is coming. Your playhouse is beautiful. Please tell me it's actually a playhouse and not a coop. Your helper worked way too hard to not get to play in it!
I read somewhere that wasps are less attracted to light blue. I painted the inside of a coop that color...actually seems to work, idk.
@miohippus My pics weren't working yesterday. Your artwork is amazing!

Interesting about the light blue! Yes it was so cute I couldn't bear to turn it into a coop! DD wanted it pink and purple- DS (8yo) vetoed that idea. ;) So we went with red white and blue instead. Going to stencil white stars on the shutters and door. I promised her the INSIDE could be pink and purple, except the chalkboard wall.
