I'm like you. I've never been to one of those type auctions either. Livestock, yes, but not a poultry one.

Kass, The eye does look like a sting. I had a hen stung by a scorpion a couple of years ago. I used Benadryl .

ValleyVet.com carries Fish Mox in the 500 mg gelcap...100 for $31.95 You would have to divide the dose. I use 1 cc of water in a syringe shaken with the powder and give 1/2 half one day and the other half the next stored in fridge....easier if you are treating two birds instead of one.

Chandler Farm and Ranch carries it too...Brand name is FishBiotic 60 count, 250mg caplets for $19.95

Can you tell a late quitter by candling? My gut tells me those eggs are dead, but I "rescued" them from the cold on Tues and they have been in the warm bator since then and aren't smelling yet. I've candled and don't see any obvious movement

Sometimes. You might try the water wiggle method. place the egg in 101 temp water. let it settle. If the chick is alive, it will begin to show wiggle ripples in the water surface. no wiggles, it is a quitter.

Thanks I'll give that a try, I REALLY don't want any nasty egg explosions!!!!!!

Okay I tried it, I think they may have been moving, but if so it was really subtle, is that normal? or should they be moving a lot?

I believe I read somewhere that a chicken can have up to 1/2ml of children's Benadryl every 24 hours, if it is allergic (like sting) it should help w/ the histamine reaction. I'm not sure where I read it, it is just in the back of my mind
Thanks, I hadn't researched dosage yet, I appreciate it. I will give him some Benadryl in the morning if the swelling isn't noticeably better. I do think there is a pinpoint/puncture spot just under and behind his eye, I really do think it is probably a bee sting.

Yes- concessions and bleachers. But bleacher space is limited.

Cool idea I hadn't heard of that trick before.

Morning Okie Friends : )

Grand daughters are here watching Doc McStuffins, birds, cats, dogs, and piggies are fed, and it looks like we'll have rain soon.

The Coweta auction was a lot of fun. I got to visit with two amazing friends (Kelly & Dusti), and I came home with some unexpected treasures. Although we were attending a "poultry" auction, I managed to win a screen bamboo plant and a six-foot-tall Cyprus. I'm going to plan and make a meditation garden, so these two trees will get me started.

@greenacregirl I hope you had a good time. Did you see us under the heater? Don't be shy. Come say hello so that we can put names and faces together.

I also bought a vintage ammunition box in dirty but otherwise excellent condition. I've been looking for one for a long time, and antique/junk store prices were way out of line. I got mine for $3.00 last night.

A pair of Ayam Cemani sold for $135.00 per bird. The roo had red wattles and two white toes, and there was something white on the hen, but I can't remember what it was.

Oh yeah, and quail. I bought 37+ Pharaoh quail. They're laying already, and they're hopping hungry happy machines. I put them in a quarantine cage in the barn, but it was late so I didn't do an official count. I think there are actually forty-one of the little guys, so I'm going to have to rethink breeding pens for them. I've looked up recipes for quail eggs and quail, and I'm excited to try them.

Here's my twenty-dollar cyprus tree:

Sounds like you had a fun time! I was going to stop in an watch for the Cemani pair but got busy with a coop renovation and totally forgot about it. Thanks for posting this! Lonny will be kicking himself he really wanted to bid on them. They were put up for auction by a friend of mine who lives in BA. I've considered getting the Cemani but between the cost and the imperfections keep hesitating. I was given the opportunity this fall to get a pair for a very good price- but the breeder ended up deciding they were two roos not a pair so I didn't get them.

@Poco Pollo I posted this on FB but I'm not sure if you are on there often. Does this look like a slip or a full capon? It's from the class at my house. I think it's a slip. The dog got him and tore his tail out so he looks offbalance.

Going to pick up Cathie Sue's SFH flock today for her. She's moving and can't take any pets. :( So sad, will miss seeing her at the auction from time to time!

I could NOT believe that tree went for $20! I wanted more trees so bad, but I can only put so many trees in my Saturn.

It was a real buyer's market last night, except for laying hens. If it wasn't laying eggs, however, it was up for grabs. I picked up a lot of seven birds, mixed Cream Legbars and Rhodebars, cockerels and pullets, for $21.00. I could pay that for one pullet, and there's two pullets minimum in the cage that I saw in the dark last night, so I can't complain. I also got two rose trees for $4.00/ea.

Of course, the best part was spending the evening with Dusti and Coral. I can't imagine a better way to spend my time. I'm disappointed we didn't meet other BYC peeps, but hopefully we can next time. Unfortunately, when I'm in Coweta, I get no signal at all, so I couldn't post anything.

I saw the post on fb, how accurate is the color represented in the pic? How old is he?
