Can the sex already be determined by the comb at a week (or birth)? Here are two of our cooper maran/bbs Ameracauna (sp?) cross from @HeyBigRhondaq

I've been wondering the same thing. If both parents had the same comb-type I'd say absolutely. However, maybe some inherited the pea comb and some the single. Mine look the same way.

Also, I think the blue silkie is fine. I've separated the last sick one and the others are all running around like normal.

The blue is in the middle. Grey is on the feeder, red (? Supposedly) and either splash or white are left. Anyway, @ashtree is going to come by tomorrow late. If you'd like to come closer o noon tomorrow or anytime on Wednesday, just let me know.

Some of my olive eggers are pea comb, some single, and I don't think its gender related. I think I have 1 for sure boy but not sure on the rest. But given my luck, which seems to be getting worse, I'll be lucky for 1 girl. The SFH chicks.....5 out of 6 are boys :( such a bummer. I can't ignore the fact I have to process one of my bigger boys. I was really counting on getting more girls but it is what it is. And oddly enough I don't have a silkie boy at all, I might look for a good pair at the show in December. Or I might just wait for some of my cockerels to grow out.

Oh and your red is adorable. They make such cute colored chicks. And apparently Greys can be that dark. I'm excited to watch it feather out. Sorry for all the confusion with timing today, working around my husbands schedule is not easy.

@greenacregirl could it be egg nests from lice? I'd look for parasites for sure.

I have silkie and sizzle chicks hatching like crazy!!! So fun!!! 4 out and 12 pipped with more to go. :)

@Kassaundra I always find myself opening up the eggs that don't hatch. It sometimes makes me feel like a mad scientist but I can accept that. Sorry you lost the whole hatch. Were you saying 1 was another Rudy? I can't wait to see what Rudy and the showgirl produce!

@HeyBigRhondaq how are the babies today? Any chance it could be Cocci? So here is my confession- I am full blown chicken addict for sure. Here is Cooptopia. Don't show my friends and family on facebook or they may force me into a Chickens Anonymous group! Big gray building on the left is for the goats/dogs, red building is going to be a brooder house for midsize chicks, the others are coops. This does not include a 3 hole quarantine pen and the shed where my 6 brooders are and a box of chicks in the house. I'm at 14 pens now!!! Actually only 10 coops because 4 of them are "split coops." Big gray one in the center houses my Cream Legbars, and when it gets really cold again in Jan I'm going to put all the hens in that coop and all the roosters in another. Maybe. If I can ever bring myself to turn off the incubator. Oh heck incubators. I'm hopeless. Did I mention I had chicks hatch this weekend and I have no place to put them so they are still in the incubator? LOL. Got to do some shuffling and move older groups around today so I can put them in the brooder shed. But they're so fun!
I think I see the SFH girl I traded to you a while back! Hope the Orpingtons are all doing good, too. My wheezing hen is neither improving or getting worse. I wormed her with safeguard maybe 5 days ago. I thought I felt a hard knot in her throat, gave her some EVOO and massaged it a bit, she didn't like that very much. She seemed stressed in the garage so put her back in the coop.. Caught her eating feed this evening. I hate to prolong the inevitable if she's suffering but also hate to not give her a chance, ugh.

@ashtree what happened to your porcelain roo? I also thought you had a splash or something. I would love some silkie eggs if you could get me some!
