Hope everyone's birds are recovering.

Had a total of ten hatch this week. Little Joe is getting outside more. He got to go nose to nose with some other calves thru the fence while we were sorting today. He was bawling at them and bucking. When we went inside the barn last night a skunk darted across the shop area and into the wood stack at the back of the barn! How it got in on the concrete floored area is puzzling. I've left the door open this evening hoping he goes out before the 10:30 pm feeding. Roger said it may have come in to eat mice...wonder if the poison bait set out for the mice would kill a skunk?

Lost five Bantam brds this week. None had any symptoms of illness. I'm thinking two were high flyers that may have had a head injury just by the way they were laying on the floor. I've been treating three juvenile large fowl with Amoxycillin for watery eyes. They have improved nicely.

I got a decent haul from the auction last night. I've decided that I'm going to think of it as a junk auction that sells chickens at the end, which makes it the coolest junk auction EVER! Crozier said next month they won't take all the junk, since they'll be overflowing with chicks and eggs, but I'll believe it when I see it. And I WILL see it.

I got a metal bunny feeder, a pair of kid leather gloves, two cartons of whiteboard paint, and a case of caulk from the junk portion of the auction. Then I picked up a quad of Cream Legbar chicks for $20.00, and a Beltsville turkey poult for $9.00.

The odd coincidence is that I saw an ad for Beltsvilles from a local breeder and looked them up last week, since even though they were pricey the shipping costs and guarantee of live delivery might have evened out. I thought the name seemed familiar at the auction, and I thought I remembered liking something about the breed, but I couldn't remember why. They're listed by the Livestock Conservancy as quite rare, and currently only bred by serious breeders, small, and able to mate naturally. I remember thinking one or two would be perfect for me, since I wanted them as pets. Well it must have been meant for me, but I can see now why the breeder released one to the auction... the poor baby has AWFUL curlytoe.

I also picked up Georgina, a special needs wryneck chick. I might be spending the weekend working on poultry prosthetics.

Anyone planning to go to the Canadian Valley Poultry Show in Norman, February 7? This will be a show and sale--only their third one. Friends have been involved in the other two and say they really are well run. I'm pretty sure I'll be going, and I'll bring some young silkies--too young to determine gender for certain, but can make good guesses.

I need to mark chicks to differentiate between lines. What do you guys suggest? Zip ties? Leg bands? Toe punch

I have been reading alot about the use of Denagard for prevention/treatment of respirtory diseases. Has anyone used this product? Just curious as to how effective it is at prevention. Also what the dosage is. Thanks

Zip ties work, you can find canisters of "assorted sizes" but you have to check every week or too that they aren't getting too tight. I use the colored plastic spiral legbands, I order them from Cutler Supply (online) but other suppliers have them. They twist on like a keyring. You do have to check and remove them every few weeks, too, but they are a little more forgiving than the zip ties. Toe punches are most useful when tracking chicks from certain matings but I am unfamiliar with the details. You can google there is a chart that shows the punch positions and what it means.

I love using Denagard, but never use it as preventative, only as treatment.
