***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thank you everyone for the well wishes and understanding. Farm life is a bit new to us and that was such a huge emotional blow. I went out this morning and picked up all the small left over bits before the kids got up. It was sad but watching all the silkies and big ducks was nice. Life goes on. I don't understand the dog tho, he didn't touch any free ranging chickens or adult ducks or baby geese (which are quite large). Just the ducklings...? We know where we will set up ducklings in the future and are hoping to get back on the breeders wait list. Oh and I did find all the pullets this morning running around.

And thanks again everyone for your kindness.
Ashtree, I'm so sorry. We have a 10 mo old lab puppy who got into the chicken run the other day. Luckily we were right ther so didn't lose anyone except for ruffled feathers. All the girls headed into the coop where they knew he couldn't get. I think the dog brain takes over and the chase reflex goes into force when they get so excited. Maybe the ducklings were just slower than the others and grouped together. Who knows. I'm so sorry again. I'm sure he's just a very good dog who just kind of flipped out to his predator side for whatever that moment was.

Hello all. It's been a while since I have been around. Have been lurking and reading lots of posts, just not making any of my own.
I have advanced in my chicken-ology and purchased an incubator. I have my first batch of "barnyard cross" eggs in it right now, just to try it out and get familiar with it. I'm soooooooooooo excited waiting on them to hatch (or not! Ugh!) They are on day 10 in the incubator. I candled last night and I "think" out of 18 eggs 17 are good. Crossing my fingers. I'm hoping I did things right and I have some nice pullets to add to my flock of egg producers.
I am going to start incubating eggs unless I have any hens go broody. I have black orpington hens that carry the lavender gene and a lavender and a black roo to put with them.(separately of course!) I also have a Black Copper Marans roo and hens I am going gather from to incubate. I have 2 Barnvelder hens and am looking for a roo to put with them so I can do them also. Have even gotten my hubby excited about my new venture and he is building me a breeding pen complete with a really nice hen house.
Wish me luck! Like I said, I'm soooooooooooo excited!

This poor chick is having a rough start. She pipped late on day 21 and started her zip hole early on day 22 but was shrink wrapped and stalled out. I helped just a bit and left her while I went to work. Well she made it out but she's a mess :( I'm wrapping her in moist paper towel to try to get the the gunk off her feathers and unstick her wing and also going to splint her feet to see if she will gain use of her toes. Anything else I can do to help her? Any suggestions for taping feathered feet?

Is it possible to breed a bantam cochin with a LF Cochin.

Shouldn't be much of a problem. If your hen is the bantam she will probably be torn up from the larger rooster (missing back feathers). If your rooster is the bantam and your hen full size then there shouldn't be a problem at all. At least there hasnt been any major problem here and I have a big ol rooster. Only problem so far is his favorite hen has a bareback.
