***OKIES in the BYC III ***

What is a natural solution to getting rid of cabbage worms?
I use the same recipe that I posted for spider mites and aphids. The vinegar is great. Also hand picking when you see them...chickens love them.
For a really serious infestation I use BT (brucillium thuricide) which is a natural spray on bacteria that the worms ingest and kills them when the eat on the plants. It is also good for tomatoe horn worms and potato bug larvae.
Since Lady bugs and bees don't eat the plants, they aren't affected by BT.
I love to see to see the beneficial bugs in the garden and am so tickled we don't have hoards of grasshoppers this year. The wet conditions kept the grasshoppers from hatching.

Yum. Our peas were a flop this year, we've only gotten one small bowl full and the plants are starting to wither already. :(

But we are getting cucumbers, zucchini, squash, onions, and a few baby carrots already. Cantelope and watermelons are starting to grow (several thumb-sized fruits), two of the tomato plants have fruit on them, and the corn is tassling. We are trying sweet potatoes for the first time too. We've done the first broccoli harvest and tomorrow I'm going to get some lettuce for a salad. It's been probably 3 years since we've had time for a garden and are just loving it!

Must not look at puppies! Must not look at puppies!

Is anyone going to the Pryor poultry swap this weekend?
Come to the swap in Coweta on the 19th. We'll have a BYC party. It would be great to see more familiar faces. : )

And...can you count 18 quail in this photo...a challenge for the children viewers...

.

I love this! It took me back to the days when I sat with my girls looking through Highlights magazines while waiting for dentists or doctors appointments.

I'm canning peas today....a bounty of Sugar Snaps amnd a few tomatoes.

I love sugar snaps! I can eat them like candy raw and they are so good in stir fry.
It is terribly humid today. You mentioning canning reminds me of how hot a Michigan kitchen can get in the Summer when produce is ready to put up. Some of us up there still don't have central AC. Sweet corn grows great in Michigan and Mom would always try to blanch and freeze enough for a box of corn a week; usually eaten with Sunday dinner. We kids got drafted to shuck the husks.

Sounds like our kitchen too. I saved the shells and ran them thru the food processor. Then froze them in quart bags for a cold snack during the heat of the day for the chickens.
