***OKIES in the BYC III ***

@Matt in Okla They are Standard Bronze. We were lucky enough to pick out a pair from Atwoods. First time raising turkeys. They are amazingly friendly and social. We're really enjoying them. Can't wait for fertile eggs. They're only about 5 or 6 months old right now. I'd love to hatch babies.

@Jeansrie Wow, she is gorgeous! My babies are awesome. So far I'm guessing about 5 boys and 5 girls. Not counting the adorable little lobster claw one... I think she's a girl. Probably going to use her as a broody. She is turning out beautiful except for the xtra toes. I think the Showgirls are 2 cockerels and 2 pullets. The cockerel I like best is the dark blue SG, but he's getting a little bit of leakage... it actually looks like a silver light frosting at the ends of his bowtie and head. He's really pretty and I'm gonna keep him maybe for a fun color pen. He's a sweetheart and I've named him Crazy Eyes.

@jrjoplin Really? I was just kidding, but I'm kinda scared now. Locking them up (with a padlock) at night sounds like a good idea. I've become attached to Mrs. Shnoodle and I'd be a mess if something happened to her. Thanks for the idea!

They are beautiful birds. I only have experience in hunting them.
I would secure them. I don't have a lot of faith in humanity, mostly because of my professions, because things get coveted when they become more valuable. You will never know what might have come up missing when secured you will only know what is missing when you don't.

I wonder why some boys are getting leakage? I sold one not too long ago, a blue SG cockerel, and he was getting gold leakage in the same areas. None of my 3 blue hens in the breeding group have leakage but it's popping up from somewhere - darn! Glad to hear you are still happy with them! :)

@Jeansrie I sent you a PM

@Adorkable It's one of those jokes that has just enough truth behind it to make you think. I would hope no one would every poach someones backyard turkey or chicken but who knows what someone will do when they feel like they could save money or make a quick dollar. Ive certainly seen people steal (or worse) for a lot less. I've already placed one of the houses security cameras to cover the yard where the chicken coop will be. This is partly for security but mostly so I can watch them while I'm in my office.

24-hour chicken TV! Awesome!

What I really want to do is put a door in the fence from the chicken yard to the front so they can free range in front of my office window thus ensuring that I get absolutely no work done. I really don't think they would leave the front yard but the chicken yard is big enough that I doubt they would look for another place to forage.

Oh, my hubby just reminded me that the turkey house doesn't have a floor so they could just tip it over and take the turkeys if they were really wanting to.. .padlocked or not haha

Locks only keep out the honest people. It's enough to worry about the four legged and winged predators, lets hope we don't have to start worrying about the two legged variety.

Oh my!!! I got a new phone and for THE LONGEST TIME, I couldn't get this site to recognize me or change my password! I am BACK!!!

I hope all are well. There is no way I'm reading everything I've missed. My update...lots of predators, sold all but 1 Jubilee pullet, excited for my Creles, have olive eggers, Crele Orp/CCL mixes, and a few IsbarXBreda (cause I want to know what that looks like and lays) in bators and under broodies right now.

Ditto! I've been unable to log in too & only got it resolved today. So, welcome back Rhonda, helllllloooooo to the rest of you!
I agree that I'm not going to try and catch up with old posts either.
That's two months worth YIKES! :)

Looks like if you want turkey for Thanksgiving....might want to get one now before the prices zooms off the chart!

I'm serving quail and pheasant.

That sounds delicious!! I have two Turkey's in the freezer from last year so I'm good, but would consider doing Lamb if I didn't.

Update: I'm back to work full time, the checkups have gone well & I'm still cancer free!!
I've lost a couple of hens over the summer and never discovered why. Just found them dead looking perfect.
Have one with a sore leg, it's not bumblefoot, she is hobbling on one leg so I have her isolated. She's eating, drinking, and even laid an egg today.

Hubby got a new job, we have a new truck (1 ton Dodge), the garden is tilled under, I am trying to finish the pasture brushhogging to ready it for winter, the hays all in, square bales too, and I must say I'm not ready for summer to end. Though I will enjoy the fall temperatures and watching the leaves turn :)

I hope you're all doing very well ...til next time,
Bev
