I'd gladly give yall our rain. It hasn't rained since last week but the ground is still a little wet. We've been hit by those two hundred year floods months within one another and I'm sick of the rain.

LOL that's how we felt here last year (NE Oklahoma).

lol, we had a lot of rain last spring! We've had nothing since a quick rain shower last tuesday!

It fill's awfully light IrionSight. Maybe not enough humidity and the air sac got to big. But I put it in the nest box for another hen to give it a try anyway.

I have a blue plastic Easter egg that I keep putting in various nest boxes in my layer pen. The girls always know it is an imposter and toss it out every day.

We have had fires south of us for several days. Looks like the fire departments working the biggest finally got it out today.

I have chicks hatching ...so far have toe punched and moved 11 to a brooder...many more on the way. These are from eggs gathered befor trimming bumm feathers so fertility was low. Thankful for each chick I get from this hatch and the next. The third batch candled and pulled 18 from 92 eggs so fertility is better.

Glad that the cow and calf situation worked out well, a downed cow is a scary and frustrating thing - something we have not (knock on wood) have had to deal with so far.

We did a lot of traveling north and south of ok over this weekend for cattle delivery and collection - there were tons of fires along the way - especially into Kansas. Glad for the drizzles today, but not looking forward to the next two days.

Poked at the turkey hen in the woodpile a bit, there was one crumpled up egg shell just outside of the nest (but within beak distance, so did not retrieve) and saw a poult leg. The turkey hen in the coop only had two eggs to start, one to finish and I am pretty sure that it is no good. Does a turkey hen stay broody like some hens do? I was going to steal some eggs from the woodpile, but never caught her off of the nest since deciding to do that.

Second question, will the woodpile hen come out and bring her poults when they are ready to eat coop food? I guess the real question is - will she be a good mom and take care of her babies as they need to be?

@bardiesSurely someone with turkey will answer your questions. I've only hatched eggs.

I'm cleaning up the brooder room this week in preparation for my first huge hatch. I had put sand and wood shaving on top of the concrete and used it as a grow out room over the winter. Now I'm removing the sand and going back to the concrete floor. I moved my big brooder out there and am installing brooders on the shelving.
Then I've moved broody hens into the tri-level cage unit and gave one of them Saturday's chicks. Mandy lost her two chicks today. Found one in the water tray and never found the second. Put her in a broody cage and she took those 12 babies right away. She is such an attentive mother, I was surprised about her lost babies.
The Thursday hatch will go to the next hen. There are three Bantam hens and four large fowl broody hens to share chicks if they will adopt them.

Pansy and Ansel have six healthy babies. With all the rain coming I haven't moved them to the ground yet.

Question My fancy electric thermometer was at 99.8 this morn turned the eggs and placed the sensor more towards the middle it was reading 114 when it should have cooled down after taking off the lid. my meat thermometer witch is for exact temps stayed about 101. How hot and long is oh owe turn it down to well done or extra crispy?
