***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Anyone near Hindsville Ark? A member on the Facebook page for Columbian Wyandotte is downsizing her flock. She has six hens and a rooster for $200 or best offer. A couple of her birds are from my bloodline and she has a few hatchery birds that meet the Standard. She has been a good shepherd of the bloodline.

I'm tempted, but have 50 CW right now and don't have room in my breed pen for more.

Snow total was 3 inches here.

Oh man, I wish I had another coop for them! I can advertise on Facebook or something instead. Do you sell chicks by any chance, Nana?

We got around 1 inch I think. Chickens didn't want out in it in the least. I've never seen them deny getting out to free range.

Haven't sold chicks in a great while. Have sold eggs to Okie folks. I'm not NPIP yet so I don't ship eggs. Won't have Columbian Wyandotte eggs from a breed pen until February.

My Orps came out of their coop for appx. 2 min. today that I saw. Didn't come out at all yesterday. They did fine without heat or light, even with their little door open. Couldn't shut them in, since the last time they got shut in they freaked out and bloodied each other. Guess the insulation and deep bedding did the trick. Probably helps that the coop is smallish, as far as them being able to heat it with their own bodies. I saw they didn't eat or drink all that much, so I broke down and gave them warm oatmeal with applesauce yesterday, and warm butternut squash today. I figured the sweet stuff would help replace all the calories they burned to stay warm.

@fallenone05 I think I may only 2 or 3 out of 7 that hatch, I don't see much going on when I candle them '( I either waited to long to get them in or they werent fertilized at all

Are these the eggs you set 7 days ago?
Eggs can be held up to 10 days before incubating IF they are in an eggs turner or are rotated twice a day. Vitality goes down the longer they are held. I prefer to not hold mine over 7 days before incubating.
Are the shells light in color or dark? The darker or spotted the shell, the harder it is to candle the eggs.
Tens days is the normal time for candling...the embryo will be more active then.

Sure hope everyone is ready for the predicted ice! Stay safe and if you have a well, be sure to draw up enough water for you and your critters.

Spent several hours today finishing up getting the housing ready for the chickens for these freezing icy days ahead.
The hen house
Hung a couple of red heat lamps over the water tubs in the hen house in the barn (removed the big 5 and 7 gallon self waterer a because they freeze).
Put in a few extra low to ground roosts using cinder blocks and 2x4s so birds could get the benefit from the heat lamps.
Put temporary covers over some of the doors and vents to keep out the wet cold air.
Hung half heads of cabbage in a wire net for entertainment.
Brought in new hay for all nest boxes and tucked some in quiet corners.
Filled all the feeders and water tubs and added fresh hay to the nest boxes in all the cages.

The big outside coop
Emptied and half filled the water tubs
Filled the two feeders and gave them a cabbage net too.
Added a thick layer of hay to the floor of the big coop and the small crate just in case...several still like to roost in it.
