***OKIES in the BYC III ***

haven't checked in a long time! Sorry for all the losses! Nothing guts me more than people saying 'just chickens' - just like someone saying 'just a child' - they all matter- Anyone have nankins? I have a bator of eggs and wondered at any hints hatching them?

I know broodies lose weight, and act lethargic, but picking Honey up just makes me feel sad for her. She has about a week more to go, and I'm having to get her out of the nest to eat and care for herself some days. When I pick her up, she feels so light and bony, it's freaking me out a little. This is the first time I've let a hen go broody, so I'm probably all nervous for no reason. What makes me feel better is when she's off the nest she seems fine, eating, drinking, and dustbathing before she goes back in. Her comb is still a pretty good color, although shrunken. Should I go ahead and switch her to chick starter/grower? Would the extra protein help her to not lose much more weight? She's taking really great care of those eggs. I'm proud of her.

Hello,
I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new on BYC, and my husband and I live in an off grid cabin, and just started raising Coturnix. We also have a small mixed flock of pearl Guineas, and chickens. Also, I was reading a few of the posts, I was wondering, what is POOPS?

When we have a broody we always give her extra high nutritious treat for her alone on the nest usually a boiled egg. I know it isn't "necessary" broody hens have survived for millinea but it makes us feel better and can't hurt anything.

Welcome to the Okie group and BYC. When this group was much more active we had yearly chicken gatherings that were called POOPS. We haven't had a poops gathering in years.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas! It's day 19. I'm getting anxious. Decided it was best not to get her off the nest today. Instead, I'm going to clean the coop, and set up her little maternity ward, so she can stay put and still have food and water close by. I sooo want to peek at her eggs looking for pips, but I shall resist.

I look at broody eggs regularly to take out dead eggs. They aren't happy about it but never had one give up a nest b/c of it.

My broody hatched out at least two chicks a day early. She won't let me have a good look yet, but I saw two very dark babies in there. I hope she is nice to them since she's a first timer and hasn't seen a chick since she herself was one.

Congrats! They usually do well even on the first time
