Im not sure about growing wheat this time of year of course i have never tried it. we plant hard red winter wheat in the fall usually in Sept. as it is designed for the winter. of course there may be different varieties that will do well in the spring and summer. if you can get it to take root and let it get a little more growth it might not damage the roots as the ate it down.. i dont know for sure as we have only grown it for cattle maybe soeone else might know more about it for chickens.

Cookie sheets and ladies hose. do the planting in the cookie sheet and slide the entire thing in the hose. The wheat will grow up through it and the hose will keep the seeds from being pulled out. We used that for cockatiels but they don't scratch so expect runners in your hose.

Seriously, I have old cookie sheets that I am willing to sacrifice to the birds. Do I need any dirt on the cookie sheet or do I just spread a layer or two of wheat on the cookie sheet?

If your worried about scratching hang it verticaly. After it's sprouted.

Set the back wafer first. What you do is to screw the front wafer counterclockwise until the bator runs full time. then you can set the back wafer so the temp is around 102. After the temp stabilizes then the front wafer can be screwed back in so that it runs at 99.5 and since it is without eggs now would be a good time to change both wafers.

Yes, I have not tried it, but ONLY b/c I was worried about it drawing preditors!!!!

Let me qualify that w/ I would only do veggie food scraps (including pasta etc) but would not ever do roadkill or meat.

Well you could pop the predators that come in to feed and just put them in the bucket. Sustainable agriculture, after all it seems that the predators are endless.

P&B - NNbreeder forgot to tell you that you won't be able to wear these hose after you do this......just sayin'...

If I owned a gun, and knew which end to point, and wouldn't get arrested for shooting a gun in town.
