***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Two questions about Buddy have been answered for us today. In spite of all he's been through the last few days, including the very intrusive vet check, shots, shaving and being confined off and on in several ways; he's been out all afternoon and shows no inclination to try to find a way out of the yard again. He comes quickly when called. We purposely allow both our doors to squeak, and he's usually there soon as we open the door. He's also guarding the yard. He's clearly decided this is home.

The other question is how he would react to our cat. He very clearly and gently wanted to be friends, but was not upset or excited when she would have none of it. Just waited patiently and respectfully for her to change her mind. We now have two young dogs that clearly want to be friends with her, but she's not coming around yet. She doesn't run, 'though, and even 'though she hissed, spat and clawed, she didn't claw him or me (I was holding her) though she could have easily--lots of show and blow!

The gunshot wounds had started to heal before I got him, and since he's been shaved and they've been treated and exposed to the air, the healing progress is remarkable in just one day!

Beautiful, but glad he is out of your yard. How are you going to release him? (obviously very carefully)

Snake Tongs LOL I won't release this one I'll preserve the skin maybe I have way too many of these around my yard so I just dispatch them and the pigmy rattlers I catch out here every year

I can so totally see not releasing the poisonous ones, especially since they aren't rare or endangered or anything. What do you do w/ the skins?

BetsyOK your one up on me, I admire their beauty and love to take pics of them, but I don't hold them, especially the poisonous ones. I am anaphylactically allergic to pain!!!

Glad to hear you were okay....hmmmm redecorating the pen space. Now you can improve all those things you didn't like about your old set up...like starting on a clean slate.... How many pens do you have to build?

I was just looking at that and trying to see if anyone had made a guess as to what breed it is, I believe that is a lost Homing Pigeon. Just looking at the head and body shape, built for speed. The leg band probably won't tell you much most bands are only usefull to the breeder. It does tell you that someone raised that bird and its not a common pigeon. I would catch it and call Mike D and get a few more to match it then you'll be in the pigeon buisness.

Look on the band. Is it plastic, or alluminum with plastic cover. If it is AU it is racing homer for sure. If not it will still have a letter on it. Look on some web page that sales pigeon seamless bands (foy's) and see what letter yours corrosponds with and will tell you if it is a racing pigeon or other breed.

Thank you Doc..hen i catch this lovely bird, I'll check and let you know what I find out about it. Right now it is flying between our barn and the old Meeker sale barn (Now Desert Plains auction). Someone has moved a travel trailer in and is caring for the horses that are there.

"Handling" was too strong a term. I held its head down with a forked stick, picked it up behind its head, and put it in a jar. Didn't mean to mislead.

Elwood - Copperhead!!!! Way to go. I'm going to buy a minnow trap! I've seen two big bull snakes, half a dozen rat snakes, some little green baby snakes I can't identify, and a long, skinny red snake that moved like lightning and disappeared under the horse trailer. I don't think I'm losing eggs yet, but I think that's not going to be true for long. I've got lots of teen birds out now that the weather is better, so I've put wadded bird netting around those pens. A bull snake can swallow a two-month-old RIR without gagging. Mowing helps keep the snakes away too. I'm going to mow and trim everything I have time for after church tomorrow.
