***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Here's a little information on the two Auction/sales in Meeker
One is in the old Family dollar Store in "downtown" Meeker 2 blocks west of the postoffice. It does not have animals. Stan Brown is the owner of the building. He is a realtor in Prague.

Then the second one is in the old Meeker sale barn 3 miles east of the stop light at the intersection of Hwy 62 (east/west) and Hwy 18 (north/south). The new owners posted on Craigslist and call their place Desert Plains. Check stuff to sell in during the morning. There was a sale on Saturday May 14. There was a contact number for a Steph (405-788-2535). Supposed to be horse tack, horses, chickens, rabbits and other animals. Will be a cowboy cafe opening soon. They post on Craiglist. Right now someone is living in a travel trailer next to the auction barn.

So glad you found our Okie thread and decided to say hello! I hope your chicken drama is between the chickens and not between neighbors or local government - and that it settles down soon,

Thanks for the welcome. Unfortunately the drama is between the chickens and bacteria. I am not sure yet who's winning.

If you would describe the problems you are having I'm sure that a solution can be found.

We have checked our trees on the 160 north of Prague and on both leases...one in Paden and one south of Prague. Also checked our other favorite picking spots along road sides...There are no Sand plums to be found. Last year I was canning juice in quart and 1/2 gallon jars. My MIL says pick all you can when you find them and can the juice because you won't find them for several years. Sage advice from a wonderful 87 year old lady!

To can the juice, I boil the plums and put them thru a ricer so the juice has fruit pulp....makes a tasty jellyam...
How much would you like?

I was thinking the same thing with the strips but the glue is a great idea.

They know what a hot wire is so they would only do it once. Hopefully I don't have to go that far. The gates are repaired & I have moved everything out of those until I have time to repair & make stronger.

My luck, I'd put on the wire and the controller and I'd be the one shocked!

I think that the funniest thing I ever saw was an older gent at Guy Rose auction years ago. He bought a solar fence charger to get the solar panel off of it for another project. As he went from a roofed building and out into the sun he found that the charger still worked. LOL

I've been working on this for a month or so with Dr. Herrin, our state vet, Dr. Zinn up in Guthrie (who actually treats chickens! Who knew?), Dr. Bailey from OSU's Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, and Dr. Pruitt with the USDA. Basically the "breeder" I bought my core breeding group of Dominiques from last year sold me a bird that he should have culled. The rooster had watery eyes, and I asked about it and he told me it was no big deal, that the rooster had hay fever. Being a naive moron, who hadn't yet found BYC, I believed him. Turns out that rooster was positive for MG. Now my whole flock is positive and my chicks are dying. None of the other adult birds were sick, but they're apparently carriers. I put the rooster down. We also had a heck of a month for predators last month too. Pair of in season big cats were taking my ducks and big chickens, pair of red-shouldered hawks were getting my chicks, and a pair of black rat snakes were getting all my eggs. I went from two broody muscovies on 29 eggs, to one broody muscovy on 7 viable eggs left out of the bunch, down to only two actually living to hatch. They are in my sunroom right now in a brooder. Um, that's about it. Lost 19 birds last month between illness and different predators. I've closed the flock. I can't decide whether to depopulate all at once, or just by attrition. They're getting ACV in their drinking water to boost their immune system, and they're getting yogurt for the probiotics. I'm not one for grabbing the Duramycin every time or feeding them medicated feed constantly. My philosophy is if they can't live with a good diet, fresh air, sunshine, clean water and all the free range time they can handle, then I don't want to be propping them up. Still, they're my babies, and it's a lot easier to have that hard-nosed stance when it's not starin' me in the face, kwim?

So tgperg if I may ask, what was the recommendations from the Dr.s you consulted to take care of this problem, Have you tried adding some Cayenne pepper and some honey to their diets also say in with the yogurt??? Lynn

They told me that I could manage it with Duramycin, and that I didn't need to depopulate. I have not tried honey and cayenne. What does that do if I may ask?
