m.ruzycki :

good afternoon everyone. I have a question. Im wondering if you can kill a chicken to be butcherd an then put the dead bird in the fridge and then come back a week later and do the scalding and process then???

I don't know why you couldn't freeze for later processing, but it will be more difficult to pluck, and I suggest you at least eviscerate the bird before freezing just to be safer.

You all know the song "You and me Baby, we're stuck like glue" ...well....there are little canisters of sticky tape you can hang for flies. In the barn, these are really handy for catching flies in the hen house. That is until you get your hair caught in one and it falls down on top of a chicken. You have to grab the hen and pull this sticky tape off her before she runs into another chicken and then they become stuck. The poor frightened hen is hanging from the tape as I get her unstuck.

Now I have sticky stuff all over my fingers. Looked for paint thinner but couldn't find the can. I spied a can of silicone lubricant spray...sprayed that on a paper towel and it cleaned my fingers great...who would have thought..."necessity is the Mother of invention".

in wild life rescue we use dawn on the birds- had to do that cuz one of my chicks last year got wrapped in one of those tapes- i don't use them outside, afraid a wild bird will get caught... so how is the hen?

Hey all. It's a scorcher out there. I spent the morning doing laundry. I spent the afternoon shopping. I went to the local thrift store that uses all proceeds for the local Meals on Wheels program. I bought $100 worth of clothes, shoes, and books. I'll spend the afternoon cleaning them all up. Then I get to box them up and deliver them to a family in need. A work friend just lost everything in a house fire. He, his wife, and four kids escaped unharmed, but they lost everything. I hope everyone else has found a way to stay cool today.

Shavon,

I'm sorry to hear about your friends house! What a blessing they survived!

It was a bit "cooler" today... 10 degrees less than yesterday at lunch.. and it's warmed up 5 more since then... blah!

You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma

I have heard of frizzle chickens, but never a sizzle chicken. What is the origin of this unique variety? Silkies with a frizzle gene?

She's fine..minus a couple of feathers on her back. Fortunately I grabbed her right away before she had it wrapped all around her body! She ruffled her feathers and gave me stink eye and sauntered off.
I used Dawn on my hands after the Lubricant spray. We keep a box of bottles of the dishsoap in the barn with the pasture spray. Hubby adds a bottle to each sprayer load....helps the spray stick to the plants.
