***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My birds are doing better than I am - I like the idea of NanaKat to use fabric as shade cloth. I have bolts of it that will never get used otherwise. I do plan to attach "professional" shade cloth to the tops of some pens tomorrow. We already have tarps on the ends of pens to help provide sun block from the West. It is still 98 degrees here - at 8:30 in the evening!

I made rings from bailing wire that would pierce thru the fabric and could be tightened with a pair of pliers. I used a 1/2 inch dowel, wrapped the wire around the dowel. Slipped the spring off the dowel and cut the rings with a pair of wire cutters....each ring was a wrap and a half....carry over from my jewelry making days. The rings were cut at an angle so the ends were sharp. Worked like a charm.

Great information on making attachment rings. I hadn't really thought about how to attach the fabric. I wonder if D-rings, like you use in building cages, would work. The advantage of the "professional" shade cloth is that it is knit so it won't ravel out.

for a laugh..... gotta love ducks! spent all afternoon getting them a new cooler pen... so i am locking up the chickens and it is getting dark, and around the corner marches the goose herding the ducks into their old pen....

wonder how he got them out !!! oh well, guess i can use the other pen for some of the chickens! it will be way too hot this weekend to work on it...

We went out to Pat Drew's poultry auction in Harrah this evening. It was so hot that there were only about 30-40 people there and only about that many cages of birds. We bought an air compressor, cage, and some fencing, then left before the birds began selling.

There won't be an auction at Cement tomorrow night.

Who is planning to go to the Newcastle auction?

That shade cloth is tough. In '99 we built a couple of temporary lean-tos out of landscape timbers and 2x6 then covered three sides with shade cloth for the horses. When we got the winds on May 3rd it took the shelters out of the pastures, pulled the 16d ringshanks out of the frames but the cloth did not even rip. It was still attached to the posts.

When we bought it at Lowes it said it was 1.00 a foot which I took to mean per sq. foot. Got to the register and had 4 10x10 pieces and got charged for running feet, or 40 dollars for 400 sq feet of 90% shade cloth.
