I have a few brooder boxes in an old metal shed, it is fully shaded @ all times plus keep a shop fan running. If I hose it down the temp drops 5 degrees instantly. On these way hot days we have hosed it off @ least 3 times each afternoon. Pretty sure it helps that I am hosing down the fan too, so it is blowing cool water. I haven't used any of misters with the chickens this yr like I used to in town. Think think the are about $20 @ lowes & they used to help bunches. Now that we have a well I am trying to be more careful withy eater usage during this drought. First summer with the well & don't want to run it too low.

Out here NW and west of Blanchard we set on top of a very large aquafer and they tell us that we will never run out of water. You might want to chewck with the DEQ and see what you look like. They say that the S. Canadian River is part of this "underground" river system and that is why it has a lot of dry spots in it during the summer time. The water is flowing underground.

I did pull up a map of aquafers on the web showing all teh large aguqfers in Oklahoma. I think it was linke dto the DEQ site.

Evening everyone!

Been away awhile but still here. Hope everyone is doing well.
Things have kind of busy and hectic lately and will be for a while, just hanging in there. Bird front has been up and down. Lost my crevocoeur hen today. Looks like a hawk tried to carry her off and dropped her. Having a serious talk to the cats about slacking on the job.
I have a bunch of beautiful ameraucana chicks that have just been transitioned to the little grow-out pen. Some how from all the eggs I bought ended up with a lavender splash ameraucana. He is going to be handsome. My feather legged marans started hatching yesterday. So far of the 12 sat, one died out of the shell and three hatched and are doing great. Dang they are huge comparied to the little partridge cochin that is nearly two weeks older then they are.
Well better get going. See you all soon!

Rebecca,
How are your Millies? I got a white chick from the mottled girl I gave you and my 2nd Mille roo! It is now getting some grey feathers. I can't wait to see how it changes.
I have way too many 6 week to 10 week old chicks - 10 partridge(6 pullets and 3 roos) and 12 Millies (don't know yet the boy/girl ratios on them).
My two LF Silver-laced are growing big. the pullet got a little lethargic so I put them back in the garage to give them some meds and TLC. hope she comes around! It worked for a couple of millies I treated last week. ( some bullies were keeping them from the food!)
Has anyone saved Les's recipe with yogurt and ? for treating weak birds? I should have saved it when I last read it!

just catching up, but here is his recipe

To help a bird recover from illness, they need extra protein.. this formula really helps them with thier recovery

My Treatment is this

“” This amount feeds one bird””

Feed the birds three times a day for three days a mixture of

This mixture is what you will need for the entire three feeds…. It is not 3 egg yolks and 3 teaspoons of honey etc…. divide the contents into three

½ to 1 x egg yolk….. give the whites to the other hens mixed into their seed or pellets (depends a lot on the size of the egg yolk)

1 teaspoon honey…. .given for energy

2 x tablespoons yoghurt…. Given for calcium and also to make the bowel go back into normal production after this upset
Only use the plain yoghurt never the one with fruit or extra sugar in it, not good for the bird

¼ teaspoon calcium powder (if you can’t get the yoghurt)

3 to 4 tablespoons rolled oats…. To give substance to the feed, or use chicken crumbles or layer pellets but soften them with some boiling water first

Sprinkle of multi vitamin powder (only if you are not already giving it to them in their drinking water, don’t overdose) just a few grains will usually be enough for this size mixture

2 to 4 table spoons of apple sauce or grated apple, it must be grated not chopped up for ease of digestion

Mix to make a crumble mixture not runny

We may need to take out a second mortgage to cover our water bill this month!

Whew! babysat my two youngest grandbabes today. They are both little live wire boys who thought I was a jungle gym!

Got home and went with hubby to buy feed and mineral. Ran by Shawnee Atwoods to see if they had any shade cloth. On the clearance row found 6 x 12 foot Kennel shade cloths for $22.49 each....down from $60.99. Bought the four in that size they had left. There were some 6 x 10 ...about 5 or 6. They were on clearance also. Have already installed one on the new pen and will put another two up tomorrow. Then the last one will be put on the old hen run to increase their shade.

We didn't get any rain last night...the storm split and went north and south of us. I'm running a drip overnight on four fruit trees and will welect four more trees each night this week. We're on a well also and are having to decide what will get water and what won't. Veggie wash water is going on the flowers in pots on the deck. Soaker hoses really keep the water in the designated beds. When I was a child, my parents and grandparents siphoned the bath water out the bathroom window to water the garden and shrubbery.

I'm still wetting down the hen house and surrounding areas, frozen fruit treats, ice in the water feeders, an industrial fan running 24/7...hoping the extra shade cloth helps.

WE NEED RAIN
