***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I had an impromptu meeting with my orthopedic surgeon today. After discussing the options, we concluded that my best option is surgery. It will take place in about 6 weeks. I will be out of commission for about 6-12 weeks. The exact date hasn't been set yet. He has to coordinate with the hand surgeon, so my elbow can be tended to at the same time.

Congratulations on the baptism, the new chickens and successful heat wave endurance.

Commisserations to those who have lost birds to the heat.

It's 108 on our thermometer, but our neighbors called to report 112 and 111 degrees on their thermometers in the shade of their porches.
The fields are yellowing more each day. Having to decide what gets watered in the yard is hard. Bushes and trees are getting the most and I'm spot watering selected perennials. The garden and livestock get the bulk of the water...having well water as your source for water does have its limitations. So far the ponds are holding okay.

We need rain. I measured a crack in the soil by the garden gate. The fissure is 1 inch wide and runs for 15 feet and is 14 inches deep. Used a johnson grass stalk to measure the depth. Red clay is rock hard.

To all the new folks. Jump right in and make yourself at home. You have found a great group of folks, willing to help you finding more chickens, eggs, pens, etc.

We sure picked a hot time of the year to introduce a couple of new chicks to our flock! BUT! We found out that even though there was some initial pecking and squawking, it was so hot today the whole flock settled faster than usual. They all dug in by the shady side of the pen and sat in harmony panting and fluffing. We did reward them with ice bottles, chilled water, and watermelon treats.

Man it's Hot!!

I went looking for the log chain I tossed out by the driveway yesterday and it was missing, Looked around and found where it had crawled under the porch for shade!! I only needed it to seperate two trees I just caught fighting over a stray dog,,
