The best source I can point you to for some good BLR Wyandotte will be Jerry Foley with Foley's Waterfowl. they have some of teh best in the country and do sell day olds at a reasonalble price or will meet with birds at most shows they attend.

I'm loving this chicken math

Ok...so let me get this straight......since I have 3 Blue Cochins & 5 Splash....in actuality I only have 2 Cochins then, right? Because you'd only be able to count each color once. Ok, I'm gettin' it. I figure I only have 3 Silkies then and not 16 like the hatchery claimed they sent.
Oh my, one could run out of birds fast this way. I better get some more birds!

Question....

I have a hen who's been broody for a couple of weeks. I'm considering buying some eggs and letting her hatch them... Am I crazy? Should I be afraid she wouldn't sit on the eggs until they hatched? And should I be afraid it's just too stinking hot to be messing with it? What are my odds?

Sooner - can you PM me the name and number for the guy who did our driveway work last year? I've cleaned out my PM messages a few times since then and didn't think to save any. Oops!

I'll be feeding some boiled eggs to my flock today. They're such troopers, making it through this horrible heatwave. I've been raking leaves and grass and throwing it into the pens to give them something to do to keep their minds off being hot. Wetting down the leaves and grass makes for some interesting chicken costumes. They roll in it and have bits of stuff stuck all over themselves for a while, until it dries and falls off. The babies are the funniest because they get lots of grass stuck on their heads.

Still overcast and just in the 80s but I was drenched after morning chores. Dang humidity.
Rearranged my rats this morning. Had one escape overnight! He'll show up for water I'm sure. Been trying to intigrate some young birds into the flocks and they sure don't like it.
Tired today,was up have the night on MIL watch,wife was up the other half.

NN how long does it take rats to have babys. I am not going to breed mine yet but was just wondering.

Trying to decide if I want to go to a sale or a rabbit show this weekend. To bad they are so far apart!lol

So we are holding at the loss Monday. So far we have not lost any more chickens. We have lost 2 chickens and one bunny. We are hosing them down every couple of hours and letting them free range all day (even if we are not here). They seem to find good spots and I figure they are more likely to die of the heat than a hawk right now (they are probably hiding too)

They all seem happy, they eat a ton still and we are getting 4-5 eggs out of the 9 chickens we have left. (That is unless someone is laying out in the yard somewhere)

I am ready for this heat to end. My poor sister in law is one day past her due date and she is huge and miserable! And today is her birthday! It can always be worse!
