Lost two or three guineas to a raccoon attack last night, and it was my fault. Vashi said there was a small raccoon near the poultry pens yesterday morning, and I intended to set a trap for it. Our electricity went off at 6 last night and was off until 7:30, and by then, between the confusion of electricity and pain of knee, I didn't follow through on setting the trap. It (they?) got the two guineas that were put up for the night, and maybe one of the three that arefused to go in. That leaves us with only two; possibly three adults and the five keets that are in the house. I feel terrible that I didn't follow through.
What is good to bait a trap for raccoons that won't attract cats? I've baited only once before, with tuna, and was successful. However, the half feral cat population (next-door-neighbors) has increased since then. Do marshmallows attract them, or is that some other animal? Must set the trap tonight and several other nights.
The only positive thing about this attack is that they could easily have gotten some of my best silkies, but didn't. Apparently the two (or three) guineas were enough. One was eaten completely; the other mostly.

Babyrnic, sorry about the mess. Those Oklahoma storms are always unexpected & damage comes quick. My sister has been here for a little over a yr now. Says she misses huricanes. You know when thy are coming & have days to tie your stuff down!
Betsy, now is even more reason to get some more guineas! Sorry about the coon getting in. But you are right. Guineas are easier to replace than show birds!

Stayed home from church. DD still not feeling well. The dog found this snake this am. Top half is red, bottom is tan. Underside is the same, to red, bottom tan. Any thoughts on ID?
Well we got a much needed storm last night. Didn't get that kind of wind damage but I'm about 3 miles away from what was the biggest fire I'd ever seen. It destroyed over 1000 acres including homes and other structures. The rain helped a lot and there are still helicopters watching for hot spots.
On another note. I've been noticing rooster-like behaviours in my rir "pullet." it's about 5 months old and I was sure it was a girl. I'm still looking for faverolles but am also seeing a few other types I might like to try. Back to researching I guess
anyone else have a super favorite breed? I want to have just two or three dif types.

Rains this morning in Shawnee area never reached us on highway 62. We could see the showers and the two rainbows since 6:45 am. We got some speckled rain. We sat out on the deck and watched the rains go by. We have calves that have never heard thunder...it was funny watching three of them jump and run with their tails in the air when they heard their first big clap of thunder.
Jarvis, we lost one of the BLRW splash pullets a couple of months ago about the time we lost the 3 little BLRW roos we bought in Prague. Those were all heat losses. Thought I had posted that. Went back to look for the post and couldn't find one. When should I separate out the remaining three pullets and Jarvis Roo? I'm thinking about Sept 1...if the heat breaks. I don't want him over-exerted in the heat. And remind me about the feather trim...roo bottom half circle and pullets top half leaving sperm feathers on the vent for both sexes, right. I have a separate pen where they will be housed until we collect enough eggs for several pure hatches. So far in the heat the remaining splash hen is laying about every third day. The other two are not laying yet...don't blame them in the heat.
With the water cooler going the temps in the hen house are around 85 - 90 so may see some more eggs from all the layers. We are going to pick up the connectors at the hardware store to get the thing set up on a hose rather than having to fill the well every 4 hours. I'm running it until about 10 pm every evening.
Sorry to hear about the storm damage from last evening and glad some of you found some nice birds at the auctions yesterdsy.
